Out of Range Error : can't get picture back

While expermimenting with a few setting on my GF FX5200 card I have inadvertantly selected a setting that the monitor can't handle. The problem is it won't revert back to its old setting and I have no picture now to go back and change it. I have taken the card out and put the monitor back on the integrated adaptor to be able to write this, but when I reinstall the card and put the monitor on it, I keep getting the Out of Range message. Any idea how I could restore the settings to what they were? I think I had set it interlaced mode then switched it off when the signal went out of range, but I am not sure.

Can you get into safe mode okay?

F8 while booting, then select safe mode.
