Consider getting a 128Mb Radeon 9600 PRO. They are faster and the same price or a little cheaper than the 256Mb 9600.
The money spent on the 256Mb version of a 9600 is wasted as a 9600 card doesnt take advantage of the extra RAM anyways - and a 128Mb or 256Mb 9600 card will produce the exact same framerates in a game. So you are better off getting a 9600 PRO.

Motion carried. The 9600 is the best bang for you buck in that price bracket.

Yes the 9600PRO is much better than the 9600 ! Ammount of memory alone does not say anything about a cards performance - dont let yourself be mislead !
The 9600 runs the GPU at 325Mhz / 400Mhz for the memory The 9600 PRO has the GPU at 400Mhz / 600 Mhz for the memory As you can see there isa BIG !! difference. This article reviews 9600 and 9600 PRO amongst others - you will be able to see a big difference in performance at times. http://graphics.tomshardware.com/gra...004/index.html

Take a look at this:
http://www.casetech.co.uk/product.php?productid=17646 Its the same card that newegg lists as Open GL 1.5 support - but here supporting Open GL 2.0. The information on newegg.com is not always correct and you cant believe everything they say. ATI page says the 9600Pro series supports the latest Open GL technology.
