Ok, Firstly here are the specs of my pc
CPU : AMD Athalon XP 3000+ 512kb SoA Mobo : Jetway V600DA/DAP 400mhz fsb AGP 8X Old Graphics Card : AOpen Geforce FX5200 256mb Ram : Crucial 512mb 184DIMM PC2700 HDD : Seagate Barracude 7200rpm 160GB CPU Fan : SoA XP3200+ Case : Midi Tower 400W PSU OS : WinXP Pro Edition Ok so I bought a Radeon 9800 pro 128mb off ebay. Recieved it, tried it in my mums VERY old PC and it worked. Took it back to my flat at University, uninstalled the FX5200 drivers, put the 9800 into my pc and it didnt work. At first I got the 3 beeps error, then realised I hadn't put in the power supply cord. So I did that, and then I rebooted. This time it just didn't do anything. My monitor stated no input signal, there were no BIOS beeps, it just didnt do anything. I took it out, then put it back in, rebooted. This time it got up to the point in the boot up where it counts the RAM and then suddenly stopped. Rebooted, this time it got up the the point where the scrolling "Windows XP" logo and stuck. At this point I thought I may have blown something up with static without realising, so I put in my old FX5200 and it worked fine. I put the pc on its side, placed the 9800 pro back in, booted up the pc and it got all the way to the windows Log In screen, so I turned the pc off, flipped it back up the right way (standing upright) turned the PC back on and *** it isnt working any more. So this has lead me to believe that there might be something iffy going on with the card, maybe one of the pins isnt touching, so I got my flatmate to put it into his pc (he also owns a 9800 pro) and it worked first time with him, with the pc both upright and lying on it's side. So it can't be the card because it works on my friends and my mums pc. Im not sure it's my mobo because my 5200 works perfectly on it. Could it have anything to do with the fact that my mums PC had a radeon rage 128 card and my mate already has a 9800 pro in his pc, so replacing it on those pcs already had radeon drivers whereas mine had geforce drivers? Noob question, I know, sorry, but I'm trying to cover all bases here. Any tips?!? I'm uterly baffled by it. If i've missed out any crucial information please tell me, and I'm sorry for the long post but I thought it may be necessary to explain it all in detail in case it is something silly like a loose connection on my mobo. PLEASE HELP! I can't wait to play half Life 2 with my new gfx card! |

Boot with your old card installed and uninstall the nVidia drivers. Power down and reinstall your 9800 (good pick, by the way) and see if it boots. If it does, just jump online and get the latest drivers from www.atitech.om. If not, try rebooting into safemode. Press F8 while botting to get to the bootmenu to do that.

Those cards are power hungry, what's your flat mate packing for a power supply in his computer...how's your 12A rail on your power supply...
Whats the true capacity of your power supply? What I mean by that is not whats written on the side like "400W" I mean what are the amperage (A) specs for each voltage on the side of the power supply for: 3.3V = ?A +5V =?A +12V =?A +5VSB =?A MD

AC INPUT : 230VAC. 3A. 50-60hz DC OUTPUT MAX : +12V = 13A +5V = 18A +3.3V = 20A +5VSB = 2.5A -12V = 0.8A -5V = 0.5A I tried ununstalling the drivers in safe mode, I even used a driver cleaner and cleaned the .CAB files etc etc and it STILL crashes during boot sequence. Weird thing is, if I uninstall drivers, take out the 5200, put in the 9800, turn on PC, it crashes somewhere around the point where it says "Detecting IDE drives" so I turn off the pc (holding down power button for 5 secs) and then turn it back on, but then nothing AT ALL comes on the display and there no BIOS beep or anything...no matter how many times I restart, nothing shows up/no bios beep until i reinstall the old card, which starts working immediately. This is testing me to my wits end. Please please please! I need help! |

having the same model video card as you. i too have problems with my video card. and i also came from Ti 4200 128MB card to a 9800 pro. it had color line artifacts around my desktop and i see color texture all messed up when i play cs. i thought it was overheating so i spend a good $30 on a bigger aftermarket vgu fan and a exhaust fan yet the problem was gone for a good month or so. until the problem arise again. then i spend another $20 on PCI dual fan. but it only helped a bit. i was thinking that my PSU isn't big enough. so try dropping a bigger PSU and see what you get. ATi are power eating cards. it's my first ati and probably will be my last. never had such problem with Nvidia. til this day i still see these artifact color lines. really annoying and bugging the hell out of me during gaming.

I blame the PSU. Your 12v rail is too weak to sufficiently feed your computer. Look for one with a minimum of 20a on the 12v rail and you'll be gaming like the l33t.

I bought a new PSU: Q-Tec 55W dual Fan +3.3V = 30A +5V = 40A 3.3 and 5V Peak Watt = 285W +12 = 20A, Peak Watt = 240W -5V = 1.0A, Peak Watt = 5W -12V = 1.0A, Peak Watt = 12W So I put it in, plug all the connectors in, put my new card in and it.......stalls...as in the cpu and psu fan start for a moment then suddenly stop, and dont start at all regardless of how many times i press the power button...So i unplug the main plug for a few moments, put it back in and it starts up! But then it crashes the same as always. SO i restart....and it does the stalling thing again, doesnt respond when I press the power plug. It goes on like this for a while, sometimes I get to the point where it asks if i want to go into safe mode, but it messes up there etc. I'm at my wits end! Cuz now I don't know if I have a faulty card (although it works in my mums very old pc) A faulty mobo (according to you my mobo is incompatable) Or a brand new faulty PSU! WHAT THE F**K DO I DO?!?!??!?! Have I done something wrong with shoving my PSU in, or have I bought the wrong one? i have blow my current mobo or anything cuz atm im using my pc with the old PSU and old Gfx card... Im so confused :S HELP! |

Of course i wish i could contribute something more constructive and conclusive at this point of time - but you wont know for sure whats going on untill you try with a quality PSU.
Q-Tec are known to be of the lowest quality out there. Just do a quick google search and you will find scores of people complaining about that product. I'd go out and get an Antec - from a store with decent return policy so if its not the problem you can bring it back. I know its a PITA but troubleshooting usually is.
