GeForce 6600 GT PCI Express: Gaming Problems
I just recently got my GeForce 6600 GT after waiting some weeks for it to arrive. After installing it, and of course started up a game to see how the graphics affected it. It was amazing, the graphics drastically improved. 5 minutes later my computer rebooted for no apparent reason.
System Specs: M7NCG 400 Mainboard 80GB HD 2.4 GHz AMD Athlon 350W PSU and the GeForce 6600 GT PCI Express My first thought was power supply, so I went and checked some sites, and most all of them said min requirements for the video card, as far as PSU's go, was 350W. Now obviously I have other things running of the PSU. Could this be the problem? I have discussed it with many other people that I know, all of which are very IT "literate", and we can't really come up with anything else it could be. Any opinions would be appriciated.

It depends what kind of 350W PSU we are looking at. If its a brand name like enermax or antec you might get away with a 6600GT and 350W - but generally i'd say NO. I really disagree with the gfx card manufacturers power supply recommendations as they are often misleading. I think they try to intentionally mention lower figures so people dont get scared off and buy the card anyway - just to afterwards find out they need to upgrade their power supply aswell.
Could you open your case and read the numbers (Amp output) off the side of the PSU for the +12V rail, 3.3V rail and 5V rail ? And of course to know the name, brand and model of the PSU would help aswell.

like sarkast said you need to say the Amp on the 12v being most important. Truthfully wattage means nothing just what the Amps on 12V because if that high enough then it will definally get enough wattage.

list the brand of your power supply. i know that antec and enermax 350watts power supply power up computers better than generic ones that are rated at 450watts power supplies.
what version of videocard drivers did you install? did you install the drivers from the nvidia website or the ones that came with the cd?? have you tried playing other games and see if it yields the same result?? |

Alrighty, got the info off the PSU that I think ya'll were looking for, here it is:
JGE P4-12V Brand and then it said this at the bottom of the PSU: 3.3V and 5V Max output, 200W Peak surge Max output 382W Now I'm fixing to take the A+ Certification tests for both hardware and OS, but I dont know a damn thing about PSU's really, someone tell me what all that stuff means maybe? |

You didnt specify the output in ampere (A) per each rail (3.3V, 5V, 12V).
It should look like this: http://www.silentpcreview.com/files/...logy/label.jpg See the numbers under each voltage ? Thats what we need to know. Either way - looking at the numbers you already provided i am 99% sure that your problems originate from an insufficient PSU. I think you should start looking for a BRAND NAME (enermax, antec and the like) with at least 450W and at least 20Amps on the +12V rail.

Nothing, nevermind.
After further reviewing my last post, I realize that there isn't much you can explain. Well, atleast a post, maybe person to person. Well, I'mma start shopping for a new PSU, see what it will cost me. Thanks for the input! |

OK but if you have a question dont hesitate to ask.
Let us know what happens once you install your new PSU. Good luck.

there is another very similar thread to this one which may fix your problem.
[resolved] Problems with Geforce 6600 Incidentally I had exactly the same problem, and it was not my power supply, and actually this is quite common.

I had the same problem as you. I have a chaintek geforce 6600 gti running on a dell 4700 @ 3ghz and 1 gig of ram. *My* problem was, and still is, the fact that Dell manufactures a POS case that doesn't ventilate well. The card gets extremely heated, and unless I pop open the case and run a fan on the innards the computer will hang and restart. Or...as it's happened already, fry the card :P So maybe a heating issue?
