Sudden problem with Nvidia FX 5200 video card
Hello,
I'm having problems with my video card, it displays a lot of pink lines and noise. I uninstalled the nvidia drivers and the installed the latest drivers from nvidia.com and it got worse. Each time I turned it on it stops at the middle and the reboots and I need to log on in safe mode. I have a vaio desktop with windows xp media center edition Do I need a new card? Here are some screen captures. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks Mauricio |

Seeing that this happens at the boot screen it cant really be a driver issue.
I'd open the PC and take the card out and reseat it. Make sure theres no dust in the slot. If the card has a fan then make sure its running and the heatsink makes proper contact with the GPU and the memory chips (if it covers them). You could also try and run a big house fan with your case open - pointed at the card to see if it might be overheating. If none of the above doesnt produce any results id say the card is damaged. But let me ask you something ? DId the card work ok for a while and this just started happening out of the blue ? Did you change anything else in that time, did you move the PC etc ? Anything even small could be of importance.

Hi,
Thanks for your help- If I remove the card how I'm going to be able to hook the monitor? Is the card the one with the monitor output and dvi output? I didn't move the pc or installed anything new. It was working fine last friday but saturday morning was apparently rebooted due to a power failure in the electric system in my house, and that's when the problems started. |

Dont leave it out. Just take it out for a moment - make sure there is no dust in the slot (its an AGP card i assume ?) and then push it firmly back into the slot. (thats called reseating)
And yes the card is the one with the outputs.

What is a AGP card? It is an nvidia fx 5200
Ok, did the reseat and I still have the same issues. Is there a way to know for sure that the card does not work anymore? Thanks, Mauricio |

AGP is the slot it sits in - could be either PCI (usually white) or AGP (usually brown and slightly "offset" compared to the other slots on your motherboard).
The FX5200 is available for both slot types. The only way to know for sure its the card is to take it to a friend (or a local pc shop) and have it tested in another PC.

My GF-4 MX440 does that when the fan is all plugged up and the chipset gets a little hot...
Your card is really just and improved version of that chipset... MD
