NVidia 440MX - problems under WinXP
I have a Novatech PC (800MHz AMD, PCChips M810LR MB, Integrated SiS730 Graphics Card) which I upgraded with a NVidia GeForce 440MX AGP8X card (bought later). This combination worked under Windows ME, but when I recently upgraded to WinXP SP2, the upgrade process crashed. When I removed the NVidia card and went back to the onboard card everything worked fine (and I've now completed the upgrade and been running WinXP happily). I've tried re-inserting the NVidia card, and get very varied results. Sometimes everything crashes, or the computer reboots. Sometimes Windows loads (in 640x480) but I get some strange distortions with the graphics 'tearing' as I move the mouse around. Sometimes re-draws cause windows to appear normally, sometimes they cause them to corrupt. I've tried stripping out video drivers from device manager and reloading the latest drivers from the NVidia website, but the installation either hangs or exits with a message saying 'an error has occurred'. I've also tried altering BIOS settings (but not being an expert not been exactly sure what to go for!) but have had no luck. Any suggestions gratefully received!

I've heard that WinXP SP2 is picky about AGP GART drivers although the case I heard about didn't have as many problems as you. You might try updating your AGP drivers (instructions here). If that doesn't work, did you do a clean install of WinXP or did you upgrade WinME? Upgrading over an old version of Windows can get you into lots of trouble. If you're really stuck and didn't do a clean install last time, you might try it to see if it fixes your problem.

Thanks for the link - I hadn't tried the GART drivers. Unfortunately, it made no difference!
Regarding my installation. I originally tried an upgrade from WinME but it crashed during the upgrade (on first startup of WinXP) and I ended up doing a clean install (thank goodness for taking a backup first!!). |
