Video card will not display anything anymore!!

Ok so here is my prob!
First..my rig

Video card: Evga 8600gts 256
AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core processor 4800+ 2.50ghz
2 gigs of ram
1TB hard drive
32 bit operating system
Model:hp a6030n

Yesterday I was on my pc and got this message with flickering of the pc screen

''display driver stopped and has succesfully recovered"

So after that I thought I was in the clear...but no, 10 minutes after even more flickering of the screen after then black screen. I am now on my onboard video card.

So...this is what I did, opened my pc, took the card out...cleaned it, plugged back in..nothing..tried to install the drivers again...still nothing...

My fan on my video card is still running, when I boot it up...it does a weird noise 3 times. So I thought it would be a good idea to bring it to a computer shop and ask them if they can just plug it in and see if it works...they said yes, they see a display when they use my card which I dont

next thing I did...though it would be a time for a format anyways..did that...still nothing. I checked in the bios ...primary video card is PCI-e

checked and swapped my DVI cable...not that either. reinstalled my drivers..nadda.

So...any ideas? Could it be my 6 pin on my power supply that is failing? (btw I got 2 of those and tried both) still nadda.

So now, I asked my buddy to lend me his cheapy ati HD4350 512 ddr2...works perfectly..though I do not have to plug that one in the power supply.

Please Help ;)

So, what is this power supply? Not just wattage, but the specs too. Make, model,
wattage, output (in amps) for the +3.3, +5, and +12 volt rails. The info will be on a
label on the side of the psu, there is no software that will tell you.

Re: Video card will not display anything anymore!!

Yep, you're underpowered. That's a very poor power supply. 70% effiency and two

+12 volt rails at (they say) 16 amps each. That doesn't mean 32 amps, you don't add

the rails and get a total. It's more like a less than 350 watt unit, and it probably worked

for a time, and now is failing. Psu's get weaker over time, and when you start off weak

in the first place, it isn't a surprise.

Try borrowing a quality psu 550 watts or greater, and see if the video card works.

Or get a decent one from a store where you can return it if it doesn't work.

Look for something like Corsair, SeaSonic, PC Power & Cooling.

Read the sticky, it'll help. Power Supply Information and Selection

So from what I read and the info that was on my PSU...

This is my question now, some sites just says it straight up...+12v@60a which is good I know now

but some are like this +12V1@14A, , +12V2@15A,,,since you are not supposed to add them up, does that mean the 12v rail only is at 14? or 15?

I know some PSU comes with single..dual rails now...but what is better?

Sorry if I didnt get it the first time, english is not my native language

Re: Video card will not display anything anymore!!

Neither is really "better", but single rail units are much easier to compare; it's harder for the manufacturer to lie and conceal product information. Your PSU probably has ~20-25A available, to be split between the two rails.

Re: Video card will not display anything anymore!!

You can't; you either see what's listed for power under the +12V amperage, if this is provided, or find a review that's tested the PSU on a proper load tester to see what it will deliver.

If you consider BIOS a form of software, then yes. There is for temps and voltages. It will not tell you anything else though.

Re: Video card will not display anything anymore!!

with multiple rails whatever amps is left after connecting to the rail is not available for something else to use
it's the available amps for use, which is not what is listed as the gross on the label

for multiple rails add them together to get the max figure to work with

for single rails you already have it

to get the available for use figure i.e.

40a on a 80+ will give 30a available

40a on a 75% will give 27a

40a on a 66% will give 20a

some of the quality manufacturers are already putting the corrected figure below the amp listing on the label by using the correct max wattage figure available for use on the 12v lines

on the less reputable ones you can see for example where you have a 600w psu but the amps listed for the 12v line[s]would equate out to 1200+w without taking account of the other lines
