Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

Hi!

I'm having problems with ATI catalyst 9.8 drivers. I downloaded them from Ati page: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html , but when I installed it, my system crushed and could not start Windows again - it keeps restarting it while booting.

I reinstalled WindowsXP pro, SP2, but I'm afraid to install the graphic drivers again... Could someone help me with this? Thanks!

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

You have xp pro, is this a laptop or desktop?

They have version 9.3 for the laptop, and 9.8 for desktop versions. Also, do you have 64bit xp or 32bit?

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

My computer is desktop, and Windows are 32bit...

Graphic card is AGP version, and motherboard is ASUS A8V, hope this helps ;)

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

No, only this one. But, Windows do not recognize it at all ("unknown device")

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

I actually do not HAVE Display Adapters there, Windows do not recognize anything of that kind, I only have "Video Controller" under "Other Devices", with a yellow questionmark.

Nothing happened, the "wizard couldn't find the necessary software". I even included the Internet search.

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

Try downloading the software again. Set a restore point before installing.

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

But even if I set the restore point, I cannot restore it because Windows won't boot... I can't restore it from BIOS, or can I?

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

You should be able to boot to safe mode, and if it won't boot safe mode, then the xp disc can be booted and do a repair.

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

The first time the problem occurred, it wouldn't boot even in the safe mode, nor was I able to repair the Windows. I tried all that, and the last (and only) option was reinstalling the whole Windows. :(

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

Scroll down the page and try installing the driver only. Don't download the full package with catalyst. See if this helps any.

Try having it search for it again. Right click and uninstall the unknown and let windows find it automatically.

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

Well, my computer did find two new hardware components: Video Controller, and Video Controller (VGA Compatible). The wizard couldn't find the software for the installation, and, again, it placed them under "Other Devices" in the Device Manager

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

Unistall them again, then run the driver install program. Pay attention to see if it placing the driver files in a directory somewhere. Then when the driver reinstalls, udate the driver and manually browse to where the drivers are.

Re: Driver for ATI X1600PRO 512 MB

The drivers go to the ATI folder, but the installation wizard later doesn't see them as drivers for "new hardware". By the way, the driver install program installs next: "ATI USB Video Device Driver", "AVIVO Codec" and some kind of program, "BDARemote", apparently it's for USB TV 0_o
