How to upgrade a video card / graphics card

Hi Guys,
New to upgrading video cards. (Are graphics cards and video cards the same thing?) I need a graphics card that suits: http://www.motherboards.org/files/ma...cuv4xd-100.pdf p27
Would love some advice or even a link to a compatible product.
THANKS

What are you planning on using this graphics card for? And what's your budget?

Re: How to upgrade a video card / graphics card

Hi,
Basic use. Something used off ebay would be fine for c. $30. I will just be using it for Internet Explorer 8 (Watching YouTube etc..) and for use with Winamp and Microsoft Office. At the moment dragging windows and moving the scrollbars are sluggish so i think a new graphics card may fix it.
Thanks

Re: How to upgrade a video card / graphics card

Well I wouldn't get that card as It uses a dms59 plug and comes with no cables which basically leave you with nothing to plug into it.

For your machine go for a geforce 2 or 4. However with any gpu upgrade the system will not be able to stream HD video via youtube/hulu ect... But standard video will be fine.

Re: How to upgrade a video card / graphics card

Ok thanks emosun. Would http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-128MB-128-MB...item414a4c7fa0 be ok so. I expect an AGP slot is a slot with a standard number of pins and an AGP card fits it universally? I expect I can just take out the existing card and stick in this new card without any major cofiguration or am i fooling myself? Out of curiosity why wouldnt the HD stream work.
Thanks for all your help!

Found this re my AGP motherboard capability

Re: How to upgrade a video card / graphics card

Your board uses an agp pro slot which is typical of workstation cards back in the day. It's a normal agp slot extended slightly at the front to provide agp pro cards with more power. However normal cards should work fine.

What videocard are your currently using?

As for the HD playback it requires a good amount of cpu as well as gpu power both of which this machine can't really provide. However standard video should be fine.

Re: How to upgrade a video card / graphics card

Hi,
Its a Matrox G400-G450. I don't much about it except my monitor plugs into it. Looks really basic. No fans or anything on it. Maybe its just a display adapter or something. Will a new video card look after all the display adapter stuff. In my situation does it matter if i get a 16MB, 32Mb, 128MB graphics card? Once IE, Youtube and Winamp are ok I'm fine with whatever. Apologies for my ignorance.

Here a pic of it http://www.gadgetpaper.com/wp-conten...88318_G450.png

Re: How to upgrade a video card / graphics card

A 128mb version of the geforce 2 / 4 should be fine for what your looking to do.
