Radeon HD 4870 Shuts Down System

My New Radeon HD 4870, runs for a few minutes then shuts down the computer.

It seems to be idling at 95C and after i rebooted the system after the shutdown the GPU Monitor showed it at 110C.

The card maybe overheating and i'm not sure the fan has ever run.

I'm running windows 7 64-bit.
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 4870
CPU: Q6600
RAM: 4Gb
Motherboard: ASUS P5K-E
PS: Corsair TX750W

Go into the ATI Catalyst Control Center that came with the drivers, go into the Overdrive section, and see if you can manually set your fan speed to something above 50%.

Re: Radeon HD 4870 Shuts Down System

Thanks for the response. I enabled manual fan speed control in CCC. I then set the fan speed to 80%. The temperature climbed to 108C.

Odd. It also appears that the card is underclocked?

Open up the computer and see if the GPU fan is spinning. It will be difficult. If you really can't see, try gently sticking a pencil into the fan--just enough to see if the fan is spinning, not enough to touch the heatsink underneath.

Sounds like you may have a faulty card.

Re: Radeon HD 4870 Shuts Down System

well the fan doesn't spin no matter what i do. i'm not sure if it's a bad card, because i've already sent in one card that didn't have the fan working, this is the second. I've got a 8800 gts that works just fine and it's fan spin well.

You're saying you've had two of these cards, and the fan didn't work on either of them?

You are plugging in both 6-pin PCIe connectors, right?

95C iS REALLY HIGH on idle. Something is wrong here. Check the BIOS readings, are there any for the card? If so check if the GPU diode is being read the same in BIOS

Re: Radeon HD 4870 Shuts Down System

Yep, i've plugged in both 6-pin PCIe connectors and the card is slotted in the 1st of my 2 pci-e x16 slots.

I'm pretty sure that i've got enough power going to the card. My PS is giving my 60 Amps on a rail.

i've got no idea how to check my bios readings for my video card. i'm not sure what to look for in there.
