Issue with third party cooling
Dear all,
I've bought a new XFX HD 4890 (Black Edition) for my rig, along with a bunch of other components I wanted to upgrade. I changed over my PC case and rigged a whole bunch of fans to it....but the other hardware has remained EXACTLY the same. Before I changed everything over I plugged in the new 4890 and it worked a dream- I ran it on load for about 4 hours and everything was fine. I changed over the parts in to my new case and fired it up- only to find that I have no signal. Everything was running power, all 7 fans were running in the PC, the motherboard was powered up and the CPU heatsink was fired up. I changed my graphics card back to my previous NVidia 8800gt and I get a full display. Now, I've changed the stock heatsink on my 4890 and replaced it with a combo of the Thermalright GTX T-Rad squared and a Thermalright VRM-2. The card was re-seated, it definately runs (since it ran only yesterday) using my power supply and the fans I've placed on the heatsink are running. Does anyone know why on EARTH I'm getting no signal now? I must note- that I don't have a fan connected directly to the 4-pin socket located on the card as nothing fits it. All the fans are running from my PSU. Does the card NEED to have a fan running through it directly to give a signal? My only theory is that the card says "HEY! This guy obviously has no fan to cool me since nothing's directly plugged in. I better not work"..... Any thoughts? I really don't want to go back to the stock cooler. It's a freakin jet engine and the thermalright heatsinks have cost me a fair bit. |

Re: Issue with third party cooling
Plug in the stock heat sinks fan and see what you get. If it works then just go back to the stock cooler. The 4890's stock cooler is more then capable of cooling the card. And loud fans are normal for high end machines , if your looking for a quiet machine I would suggest a laptop.

The card is about 1 week old, I bought from a guy and I'm just waiting for him to pass over the warantee to me so I can RMA the thing. I'm going to try putting my aftermarket coolers on the second card (if/when it does arrive). Simply because I spent SO much money on it... it's a complete waste otherwise. |
