New 9800GT not working... bad card?

Hey,

I just bought a PNY 9800GT (energy efficient edition) video card to replace my old 7600GS, but after installing the new card I was dismayed to hear the dreaded video error beep code, and my monitor did not emerge from sleep mode. I switched the cards back and forth a few times; the old one always worked, while the new one only yielded the same beep code every time, even after jostling it around and cleaning the contacts repeatedly. Is this an issue with my PSU or is it just RMA time?

My specs:

Chaintech MTM-K800 motherboard (I think)
Athlon 64 Clawhammer 2.4 Ghz CPU
2GB PC3200 RAM (2 sticks)
Thermaltake 430W PSU

I think you need to try a more powerful PSU-a series 9 card can use 400 watts on its own.

Thanks! If it's a power problem, though, would the beep code just be for a video error (1 long, 2 short)?

In any case, does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement PSU? What would be sufficient to power the new GPU, without sending me to the poorhouse?

Re: New 9800GT not working... bad card?

If the video card isn't getting enough power it won't register right with the motherboard, which then gives the error for a video problem because the graphics card isn't showing up right.

The Thermaltake PurePower 430W is actually a 350W PSU (it's one of the few Thermaltake products I consider pure garbage), and we recommend a quality 550W PSU for a 9800GT. I would recommend something like the Corsair VX550W, about $80 on Newegg.com. *Don't* go for something cheaper, the Corsairs offer the best quality for the money.

Re: New 9800GT not working... bad card?

Ok, I replaced the power supply and it's still not working... is it possible my older micro ATX motherboard isn't just getting the necessary power to the PCI-E slot? The video card I bought doesn't have its own 6-pin connector...
