I bought a brand new Asus EAH4870 DARK KNIGHT 1G video card from new egg, but im having driver issues with it. I can run older games with no problem, but when I try to play Red Faction Guerrilla, which is a newer game, the screen resolution and color quality drop to the minimum and an error message comes up that says something like "an error has occured with ati2dvag.dll, restarting your computer will resolve this error". I have the latest drivers downloaded from the Asus website, and the rest of my drivers are up to date. I just reformatted my harddrive, to insure there were no old drivers lingering around, purchased a 550 watt power supply to support the card as well. I've been searching for answers for this for awhile and nothing has really helped, so a solution would be much appreciated. Look below for my system specs:
Vid Card: Asus EAH4870 series Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 3.4 GHz Monitor: ViewSonic vx2260wm Motherboard: NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI Motherboard Windows XP Professional SP3 let me know if you need anymore info and thanks for your time people, this problem is really driving me crazy .

Re: Radeon 4870 ati2dvag.dll failure
It actually doesn't matter what brand because 550w isn't enough for the 4870 , you'll need a 650w or higher. Avoid the manufacturers recommendation for power supplies as they are low balled to appeal to a larger market.
Something like this would be correct for that system http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005

Re: Radeon 4870 ati2dvag.dll failure
Im not sure if it would be a power supply problem. i recently purchased a new Rocketfish 550w power supply which has 2 cables that run directly from the video card to the power supply unit itself, so the idea that the card isnt getting enough power would be suprising to me. Also, I had the ati drivers for the card installed before i reformatted, and the ati drivers caused more problems and more sporadic crashes/dll failures. the asus drivers have worked well except when I try to play Red Faction Guerilla. Any more ideas?

Re: Radeon 4870 ati2dvag.dll failure
Best Buy's Rocketfish PSU's are rubbish so it would not be surprising at all.
It's a 500w model rated for 550w peak @25c a temp lower then it will run in your PC(unless you keep it in the freezer?) with a one year warranty instead of the normal 3-5 years of comparable priced units. While the newer CWT produced units are somewhat better then the older Huntkey manufactured units they still don't qualify as a good supply if you needed 300-350w it may work ok but you need more to run a 4870 card. |

Re: Radeon 4870 ati2dvag.dll failure
First off thank you for your quick replys and helpful input. Wrench, your absolutely right, I just realized that this power supply is only a continuous 500watt psu so im going to return it to best buy and try a better one. They trick you by putting 550w in big font, but that is the peak, not the continuous. tricked by advertisement, lol. well, ill try a better power supply and ill let you know if that does the trick, thanks again.

Re: Radeon 4870 ati2dvag.dll failure
ok, so following your suggestions i returned my rocketfish power supply and purchased a Corsair TX650W power supply. unfortunantly, after running the game Red Faction for about 5 minutes, the same problem occured. Screen resolution and color dropped to the minimum and an error message pops up "ati2dvag.dll has stopped working properly and requires a system restart. please save any unsaved information and restart". The video card driver is up to date (from the Asus website, checks in with my driver updater too), so now im back to scratching my head, ill list the specs below again:
Processor: Intel core 2 duo 3.4 Video Card: Asus EAH4870 Dark Knight 1G Power Supply: Corsair TX650W Motherboard: Nividia 650iSLI Sound Card: Creative Audigy 4 Sound Blaster 4 GB's DDR2 RAM Monitor: ViewSonic VX2260WM Windows XP Pro SP3 I've looked for solutions for this for awhile now, and its driving me crazy, so any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

Re: Radeon 4870 ati2dvag.dll failure
Well, I had my on board sound disabled in the bios options, but I will try removing the sound card anyway. unfortunately though, I cant even start my computer anymore, i'm having power supply issues now (its always something
). My motherboard isn't responding to my brand new power supply, the motherboard doesn't even light up. I've tested the power supply several times via the paper clip method, it works perfectly fine. I've tested the motherboard with my old power supply, boots up just fine, then I disconnect the old power supply and connect the new one, usually no response. I've been able to get it to start only a couple rare times, and when it starts, it stays on, until I turn the power supply off, then it takes forever to get the motherboard to recognize the power supply again. Any advice? I'm considering purchasing a new motherboard if it is absolutely essential, but it works fine with my old power supply, so im not sure what the problem is. specs are below:Processor: Intel core 2 duo 3.4 Video Card: Asus EAH4870 Dark Knight 1G New Power Supply: Corsair TX650W Old Power Supply: L&C, LC-B450E Motherboard: Nividia 650iSLI Sound Card: Creative Audigy 4 Sound Blaster 4 GB's DDR2 RAM Monitor: ViewSonic VX2260WM Windows XP Pro SP3 |

Re: Radeon 4870 ati2dvag.dll failure
If you have access to a digital voltmeter follow the steps here checking the PS_on(green wire) and 5vsb(purple wire).> Test your power supply with a multi meter

Re: Radeon 4870 ati2dvag.dll failure
Check the motherboards PSU connectors are right, the 5V connector can install incorrectly, causing your issue.

Re: Radeon 4870 ati2dvag.dll failure
I dont have a voltmeter, but instead I tested my corsair power supply with my roommates computer, worked without any problems. So im left to believe that my motherboard is having trouble cooperating with a 650w power supply. This has been the final straw for me with this Elite Group motherboard, its caused me several problems with blue screens and other errors for a couple years, and now its acting up with my new power supply supply. I've decided to buy a new Asus motherboard and hopefully this purchase will solve my problems, and ill get back to you guys in 3 days, hopefully with good news. Thanks.

Re: Radeon 4870 ati2dvag.dll failure
A couple of us got burned by them back in the day when if you bought a new Pentium 4 you got a ECS board free on a couple of special deals, the return warranty work wasn't worth it, that was a classic case of you get what you pay for.
They improved some from back then but there are still a lot of issues. |
