9800gt Loses signal while playing games!

I have troubles with my 9800gt OC Edition from BFG. I have a Amd Quad at 3 ghz, 6 gb of ram, raidmax simlodon case using their psu. While playing games or heavy use the monitor just loses signal. After that the screen is blank, no sound, but the computer is still running. My psu has a burning smell, so I'm guessing thats the problem, it's the 500watt raidmax one.

For future reference , when electronic components make a burning smell , don't plug them into the wall.

Raidmax is the McDonalds of computers parts , the only thing they make is junk. This is what you should be using

Re: 9800gt Loses signal while playing games!

It's not a burning electrical smell, more like burning plastic. I don't have any money to spend right now either. I know for a fact it's not overheating, but would a PSU just randomly cut out power to the gpu? If I try turning it on right after like when I get into windows, or even the POST screen it will go out again. When I turn my gpu fans to 100% it lasts longer.

A PSU will shut off if it's being asked to draw more power than it can deliver. It's a common issue when low-quality PSUs are asked to power more than they can handle. Also, the smell of burning computer parts is the smell of burning plastic.

But will it only shut off to the graphics card? Because all the fand and lights are on, just no sound or graphics.

Yes, I've seen that happen. I think in those cases it's actually the graphics card shutting itself down when it has insufficient power, or the wrong voltage, but the power supply is still running the fans, etc.

If your power supply smells like any kind of burning then turn off the machine until it's replaced. I promise you a power supply is much cheaper to replace then your house after it burns down.
