New video card
Hi.
I want to buy a new video card today : ASUS EN9600GT Silent but my power supply is only 400W and the minimum requirements from the ASUS EN9600GT Silent is 450W, what do you guys think? Will it work? If I try can I damage the video card or it will just crash when playing games? Here is a link the video card details: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/150...ard/index.html One other thing, are all the new power supply units coming with cables like the ones that I attach in the image below? Thanks for your help! Last edited by r32; 10-08-2009 at 12:45 AM. |

The minimum is actually 550w for a 9600 , the "450" recommendation is low balled by the manufacturer. Also if your buying a silent gpu buy only low end silent cards. High end silent cards require more case fans , thus not really making the pc silent.

Re: New video card
You've replaced crap with slightly more powerful crap. Don't waste your money, return that PSU and get a worthwhile one.

Re: New video card
Unfortunately I can't return the power supply anymore. I will have to survive with this one I guess until my next upgrade...but I have 2 years warranty so at least for that time I feel safe :)
Guys, I have one more question regarding my sound card. If I play music or watch a movie and I have mute on for the microphone, then the sound is good, but once I unchecked the mute option then the sound is bad, any idea why? |

Re: New video card
What is the model of the sound card?
And the PSU warranty won't cover damage to your other components caused by the power supply burning out and frying the rest of the system. Which is likely, given Chieftech's quality, or lack thereof.

Realtek HD Audio... By the way, I live in Europe and I bought all my components from one shop, in case I have problems I just take everything there and they will replace it. Don't know about States but here sometimes the warranty is easy job. |

Re: New video card
The problem is the power supply will "wear down" but may stay working. If it's worn down it won't be able to power the 9600 , but will still seem to work fine when tested for a return. They can easily say the power supply is fine and the card is to blame , even if it is in fact the power supply. You should be able to return that power supply easily if you only had it a day or two.

Re: New video card
The following brands are good , corsair , coolermaster , pc power and cooling , thermaltakes tough power series , silverstone , ocz , or seasonic. Make sure the power supply is 550w or higher with an 80+ certification and has 26 amps on the 12v rail or higher. Do not let them talk you into anything less.
If you bought it yesterday then you definitely can return it. Especially if it's new and not even used.

Re: New video card
For your any Corsair PSU of 550W or more sure be great. The HX series is a little bit hither end because it has better efficiency and such, but you don't *need* it since the TX ones have great efficiency to begin with.

Re: New video card
I don't know about sound cards; I had enough trouble with mine. I might be able to help with basic troubleshooting, but not until tomorrow at least, I'm going on a road trip.
Also, you can tell I wrote my last post at 5:00AM after no sleep... lol
