Re: HD 5870 & E8400 3.60Ghz
I was wondering if any of you guys could tell me if you think an antec earthwatts 650 watt would be strong enough to run a single radeon 5870?I hear under full load the card runs at 401 watts all i have is 2 sticks of 2 gig memory a 160 gig hardrive and a 500 gig external drive a dvd rom and an e8400.I think they tested it on an i7 920 and was 664 watts usage under load but im pretty sure an i7 draws more power then an e8400

Re: HD 5870 & E8400 3.60Ghz
Using an E8400 instead of an i7 would only drop the power usage by ~20-40W, which still puts the PSU at the bleeding edge of what it could deliver. I would not run a system with a 5870on less than a quality 750W PSU, and an 850W would be preferable.

Re: HD 5870 & E8400 3.60Ghz
That right there tells me it's garbage. Four 20A rails on a 550W PSU? If each rail could deliver 20A it would be a 1000W PSU. It's probably four 20A rails sharing 30-40A from the primary.
We call for a minimum 650W PSU for the Radeon 4800 cards, and we prefer a quality 750W for the 4890. The Corsair TX650W has 52A on the +12V rail, and the Corsair TX750W has 60A. I would say the TX750W minimum for the 5870.

Re: HD 5870 & E8400 3.60Ghz
Ya but the 5870 draws less power then the 4890.To be safe id deffinetly would go 750 but a good 650 should handle a 5870 no problem. My gtx 260 only draws 182 watts under load while a 5870 draws 188 watts under load.that 401 watts was system load so a 650 watt a good one would be plenty for a 5870 since my psu is powering a gtx 260 with only a 6 watt difference and i had no problems going on 6 months now. They only reccomend a minumum 500 watt but i deffinettly wouldnt go that low.750 isnt a bad reccomendation though since it would be easier on the psu.
