[SOLVED] AGP 8X compatibility

I have an older computer (A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo with Athlon XP 300+) that I've been fighting with for some time now. The computer itself works fine.

I bought a XFX Geforce7600GS several months ago for it, but have not been able to get it correct. It was bought used on eBay so it may well have been bad from the start. The machine will start and run fine in windows and 2D applications, but in most 3D apps I will quickly begin to get artifacts. (white bars in menus, "mosaic look" on stationary objects) I will also see the white bars in the ATITool utility though it doesnt count them as artifacts. The computer does not crash or lock up but most 3D games are unplayable.

I've swapped out a Thermaltake 420 PSU for a CoolerMaster 460 (RS-460-PMSR-A3) Swapping in different processors and memory has no effect either.

The mobo has an AGP Pro/8X slot which supports 8X/4X. The video card has the 1.5 volt key on the edge connector,so that it must be tolerant of 1.5V signalling. Could it be the case that it actually operates at 0.8V but isn't necessarily capable of operating at 1.5V?

I don't have access to another AGP motherboard to test with and I expect that will be the only way to confirm this.

Comments?

Re: AGP 8X compatibility

XFX & Ebay make me suspicious. Questionable product from a questionable source.
I would try another graphics card.

Re: AGP 8X compatibility

Well let me rephrase. . .

Assuming that this card is good, should it run on this system?

Re: AGP 8X compatibility

Yes it should and it does, if it was not compatible with 4x/8x it would not show any image at all.
