Best settings for ATI 4800 Series.

Hey, in the CCC ( Cataylst Control Center ) I can tweak the settings for performance and for improvements in graphics. This is a silly question I know, but lets say I want to run a game in High settings, would it be better for me to set the CCC settings to the optimal graphics or optimal performance. or should I put the games grahpics to low (instead of high) and switch the settings on the CCC to optimal graphics. Hope someone can answer this and thanks.

Re: Best settings for ATI 4800 Series.

It really depends on the game/application...

Sometimes running the game on low settings but using CCC to max quality can yield good results within the game. Sometimes its best to roll back the CCC settings and max settings in-game.

Re: Best settings for ATI 4800 Series.

Thanks for the response, Yep I tested WoW with full graphics in WoW game with optimal settings in the CCC, and at parts with many textures NPC's around it started to game lag, not lag due to the latency. I'm getting Arma 2 soon hopefully, so i'll be able to do some more testing, but right now I guess Arma 2, will run better on half way between optimal and minimal.

Lag with a good 4800 series should not happen. What are your fulls specs including the power supply.

Re: Best settings for ATI 4800 Series.

I have the exact same CPU as you have, and unless I overclock it severely bottlenecks my Radeon 4870. Generally I can't pull maximum settings in games like Fallout 3 unless I overclock to at least 2.6GHz, and it doesn't really shine until I get over ~3.0GHz. Overclocking the CPU would probably give you a bigger performance boost than overclocking the GPU. But you'll need an aftermarket CPU heatsink and probably a more powerful PSU. What brand is the 510W you have now?

Re: Best settings for ATI 4800 Series.

Ick. Do you know which 4800 series card you have? There's the 4830, 4850, 4870, and 4890, and also the 4850x2 and 4870x2 though I think we can rule those out. If you don't know, download and run GPU-Z, it should tell you what you have. Check your temperatures while you're at it.

Re: Best settings for ATI 4800 Series.

I did the Gpu-Z thing and it still says 4800 series. However I think its the 4850, and right now on idle my fan speed (on the card is 1% and my card temperature is 41 degree's celcius.) that's at idle ofc:Plol

Re: Best settings for ATI 4800 Series.

Btw, for me to get around 40-42 degree's and little power of teh fan I put a huge fan on the outside of the case, it's just for testing now but I think it's better to just have to replace a cheap fan instead of an expensive graphics card in the long run:)
