No boot /w two video cards
Hello,
I'm really sorry if this is a FAQ, I'd tried to search the net for an answer before I came here. I've been using Nvidia Quadro FX 1700 for two years or so, and - given it's a CUDA capable board - now I'd like to calculate something with it. The CUDA SDK says the program can only run for 5 seconds, so I need another card to show the ordinary graphical output. Ok. First I tried the nearest card which was around: an ATI Radeon 4670 and connected it to the monitor - the computer didn't even want to boot. (It didn't reach the BIOS setup phase even.) Then I thought ATI and Nvidia don't like each other so I tried a GeForce 8600 GT with exactly the same result. Both videocards were in a PCI Express x16 Slot. I believe a computer should accept two video cards, if not for CUDA computing then for two monitors, for example. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Fanny |

Re: No boot /w two video cards
Hi dai,
Thanks for interest in this problem. I'll be back with a detailed answer tomorrow as I'm away from that computer now. I *would* run Debian Linux (AMD64 sarge). But the boot process does not even start, it leaves the screen blank while the processor seems to be doing something as the fan goes high. |

Re: No boot /w two video cards
Well, my eventual goal is to try out the Nvidia Tesla C1060 board for GPU computation, which isn't even a video card in that it has no video output whatsoever, but connects via PCIe x16. In a dual card setup two of them would not help if I want to see something on a monitor.
But before that, the idea is to experiment with a video card that has both video output and can calculate something generic as a GPU well. So, here it is: what are you running: Debian Linux AMD64 sarge (when it boots) video card: Nvidia Quadro FX 1700 cpu: Intel Q6700 m/board: Intel BLKD975XBX2KR (/w 3xPCIe x16) ram: 8GB 667MHz DDR2 ECC CL5 DIMM power supply: Q-TEC 13981 500W BigFan LN PFC brand: this is not a brand computer wattage: 500 W temperature and voltage listings in the bios (I wonder if this helps): Internal Temp: 49 C Remote Temp: 53 C V12.0: 11.812 V V5.0: 5.032 V V3.3: 3.268 V V1.5: 1.464 V Vccp: 1.265 |

Re: No boot /w two video cards
your 12v line is down and the supply is low quality,it's peak power is 500w which would make it at 450w at best and is probably responsible for the high temps
upgrade http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...corsair%2b550w

Re: No boot /w two video cards
Update:
====== Today we installed an Enermax Revolution 85+ 1050W PSU and the experiences are the following: 1. Two video cards (nvidia quadro fx 1700 & nvidia 8400 gt), each of them with no external power supply still won't boot, even if the motherboard is connected with an additional cable to the PSU. 2. Two video cards (two high-end-ish ATI Radeons), each of them with their own external power supply will boot nicely, however. The conclusion is that the PCI-Express bus may not be able to deliver enough power for two video cards (well, if one of them is an NVidia Quadro FX 1700, at least).
