I recently bought a 16:10 monitor whose native resolution is 1680x1050 but all the available resolutions are either 4:3 or 16:9 (which the monitor does not support). It supports resolutions much higher than I need so that is not the problem but I don't know how to get it to display 1680x1050. I'm running Windows XP

Try installing the drivers for the monitor , and updating the drivers for the card. The card was released before flat screens where more mainstream let along widescreen as well.

Thanks, I tried this and now the option of 1680x1050 comes up but when I select it the whole desktop does not fit onto the screen, and to view the bits outside the screen you have to point the mouse there.
The screen says its native resolution is 1680x1050 so is the monitor faulty and not able to display it (or it tells the computer that it can't display it) or is it still a problem with my graphics card? I tried connecting my laptop to the monitor and it wasn't able to go as high as 1680x1050 but that might just be limitations of my laptop.
I'm currently connecting through VGA though my computer and monitor support DVI, would that make any difference?

It might , try the dvi connection instead. Also try it on a newer machine with a card that'll support the monitors resolution as well , to eliminate the possibility of the monitor being faulty.

I've now tried it on another computer with a VGA cable and it was able to display the 1680x1050 so it is not a problem with the monitor, and it probably means it's not an issue with it being VGA anyway. Any other thoughts?

The standard 9800 supports 1680x1050 , my guess is the xl never got the upgrade to support it.
