Need precise steps.

I'm upgrading from a ATI Radeon HD 4850 to a Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ OC. What are the exact steps I should take when making this change to make sure I don't run in to any problems?

I already have the latest ATI and Nvidia drivers for both cards saved in case something goes wrong, and I know how to put a video card in to my PC. Just wanted to know how to go about everything else. I figured I would do this.

1. Uninstall ATI drivers
2. delete all ATI folders
3. run Driver Sweeper to get rid of anything else ATI related
4. shutdown PC
5. replace ATI card with Nvidia card
6. turn on PC and install Nvidia drivers
7. reboot
8. run CCleaner to get rid of any registry errors

Does this sound about right?

I don't trust tools like CCleaner on Vista, Windows can be very, very touchy about its registry, and if you fix some errors it will freak out.

Otherwise sounds about right. Only thing I'd like to point out is that going from a 4850 to a 9800GTX+ is more a lateral step than anything else. You'll notice some mild improvement in performance, but not a lot. 3-5fps more in most games, on average.

I have been using CCleaner for Vista for almost a year and nothing bad has happened so I think it will be fine.

I know My performance gain won't get much higher, but I like Nvidia more than ATI and while I'm happy with my HD 4850, it is getting a bit old and showing some graphical artifacts sometimes so I figured this would be a good replacement.

Re: Need precise steps.

Well a 4850 is nowhere near old enough to show artifacts simply due to it's age. It's more likely it's overheating or is underpowered.

I did a lot of over clocking with it. It doesn't have a second slot cooler too so it constantly runs at high temps. It's at 60 degrees at idle without any over clocking. Under full load it goes around 80-85 degrees. I thought it was my PC not getting air, but I put in my girl friend's 8800 GT and it ran at good temps. So I think the over clocking and the bad cooling have gotten to it. I have had it for about a year now anyways so it's not like I wasn't going to replace it soon.

Re: Need precise steps.

CCleaner is about the safest general cleaning software around because it doesn't clean that much.
After you uninstall the ATI drivers, look in C: Program Files and delete anything remaining that refers to ATI.
