9800GT Problem?

Hi guys,

Heres the deal.

I brought a custom made PC around 5 months back. Its a gaming PC so as you guessed im a pretty competant gamer :)

The porblem i have had for quiet a while now is within an hour of playing a first perosn shooting game or any intensive game, all of the screen will suddenly change colour (it turns multicoloured) and the sound starts repeating.

After this has happened the PC wil not respond to any commands. I have tried to check the tempretures but i cant as the PC wont respond.

When this happens I always have to restart the PC at the button (whihc i hate doing).
This is really annoying for online mp games since i suddenly disconnect at the wrong times.

I dont believe it is a fan issue because , well to be honest my computer keeps me cool i have so many fans.

Hope you can help...

System Specs:
ASUS P5QL PRO Motherboard (intel P43 Express Chipset)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.80GHz
nVidia Geforce 9800GT
4gb RAM
have a soundblaster soundcard but i doubt that matters.
Powersupply - NeoPower 650 Blue

Re: 9800GT Problem?

Start by looking at the bios for both idle temps and voltages. Report them here. Then, download and run SensorviewPro and see what it says for the idle. (we are looking for something to guage changes). Then, when you begin playing a game keep checking the Sensorview program to see what the temps and voltages are as you put stress on your system.

As an aside, most of those Neopower supplies are some of the better Antec models (although they have also had a few issues from time to time), so I would hope the power supply is doing the job for you. It seems to be big enough to pull this rig with no issues.

However, since it is Antec I wonder if that might be an issue. Anyhow, we shall see as we go along, don't want to jump on that yet, but wanted you to have a heads up on this possible issue.

Re: 9800GT Problem?

Bios setup menu~~Power Menu~~Hardware Monitor. All bios menu's aren't the same, but give that a try and see what you come up with.

Re: 9800GT Problem?

Those voltages are low with Sensorview appear to be low on the +12 line, but normally the bios is the most accurate so my guess is the voltages are O.K. However, if you could try another power supply in there that would rule that out very quickly.

Your temperatures are fine as far as we can see, so that does not appear to be an issue at this point. Have you blown the dust bunnies out of the fans and heatsink areas recently with a can of compressed air?

How long has this been going on? Have you updated your video drivers? Anything added before this happened?

Re: 9800GT Problem?

This happened when i first got the computer and put cod4 on it. I thought it was jst the game and took ti off again. But now after a few months it has started doing the same thing to other games as well.

All drivers are up to date but ive never cleaned it out.

The only other thing i could think of is i use my tv as my monitor and the tv dosnt always agree. it does thigns such as changing channel randomly, changing source and sometimes emmiting a very strange buzzing osund but not the elctrical type, more like the sound of an insects wings buzzing but much faster and lower key. COuld my monitor be the problem?

But i didnt know you could get compressed air.

Re: 9800GT Problem?

I doubt the monitor would cause what you are seeing. I sure would see if you can borrow another power supply to try in there, that one could be giving you issues and you not see them in normal monitoring. Another clue is that when you put the demanding game on there, it began to give that symptom. I would at least give that a try. If you don't have one, go to some place like Bestbuy or Staples and get a good one and try it....if it does't solve the issue take it back for a small restocking charge.

You can buy a can of compressed air for about 4 bucks at any walmart, drug store, any big box store type. Might be a good idea, because those fans can get clogged and slow down. Normally, that causes heat, but your's doesn't seem to be hot.
