Ati xfx 4890 not working!
Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and I signed up for a serious reason. I just recently bought a 4890 from newegg and a power supply with two 6-pins, little did I know I needed a 6-pin and a 6+2-pin. Returned that and got a new power supply that has the 6 and a 6+2. The problem is I have everything connected right and I get a message that says the connectors are not in or not in right read manual ect. my PSU is 580w and everything seems to match up right but still the same error message! I've been very frustrated with this please someone tell me I don't have to send the video card back!

I'm the only tech in the graphics card forum right now, and I start at the bottom of the pile and work my way up. I'll get to you in a sec.

Re: Ati xfx 4890 not working!
Ok, part of your problem is that a 580w PSU is barely, barely sufficient for a 4890. If it does manage to turn on and work with that PSU you'll still get sub-par performance and wear out the card or power supply very quickly. We recommend a minimum 650w PSU for the 4890, preferably 700w.
Second, did you check how you connected the PCIe 6+2 connector? Is it oriented correctly and firmly attached? *DID* you read the manual? Always rtfm.

Re: Ati xfx 4890 not working!
I did indeed, the pci 6+2 is in very firmly. also on newegg the recommended minimum wattage said 500 watts.
here's a link to my PSU and GPU. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817174041 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150359 |

Re: Ati xfx 4890 not working!
Manufacturers *always* low-ball the power requirements. In fact the most often quoted figure I hear for the Radeon 4870's minimum requirements is 550w, and it's weaker and less power-hungry than the 4890. A 600w is the lowest I would ever consider going with a Radeon 4890, 650w is the recommended minimum for the card to work at full capacity and have a long lifespan, and 700w+ is recommended.
If you don't believe me or if I'm wrong then RMA the card back to Newegg or XFX for a replacement and see if it works.

Re: Ati xfx 4890 not working!
lol well crap. my friend told me the drivers are very gay cause I had an nvidia as my last GPU, and he said I should reformat that so I will try that and if it still doesn't work I'll probably send it in and get a new one. and if THAT doesn't work then I guess I'll have to upgrade my PSU ughh lol. thanks man.

Re: Ati xfx 4890 not working!
Yeah, you should have removed all your old drivers before installing the new card, you don't have to reformat though. Simply use DriverSweeper http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D--...%29_d1655.html to remove the Nvidia drivers, then install the ATI drivers. If that doesn't work, send the card back for a replacement. If it still won't work then definitely get a quality PSU, I recommend this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006

Re: Ati xfx 4890 not working!
That will work. It isn't ideal, lower quality than the Corsair unit, but it will do.

Re: Ati xfx 4890 not working!
Yep, that's the idea of 6+2. It's an 8 pin, split off the 2 and it's a 6 pin. Much like the 20+4 or the 4+4.
