e-Geforce 8800GTS

Been having an issue pop up recently with this video card, I was playing Call of Duty 4 on it and after about an hour or so of play, pink lines came up on it and the PC locked up, restarted it, had the same issue on the monitor until I did a full shutdown, then everything came up fine on the desktop, but at times the youtube video pages when scrolling would flicker.

Well I decided to try World of Warcraft, the moment any movement took place in the game, which happened to be the login screen, it freezing up or trying to, seen artifacts all over the screen.

Could this be a video card issue?

I tried installing latest drivers, did nothing, I tried the onboard video which is a craptastic Radeon X1200, it appeared to of worked and not freeze up.

Re: e-Geforce 8800GTS

You have a Coolmax power supply, which is a bit of a junky brand, and we also recommend minimum 550w for the 8800GTS, so it could be one of three things.
1.) Your graphics card VRAM is dying, in which case you'll either need to RMA the card for a replacement or buy a new one, in which case we'd also recommend a new PSU.
2.) Your power supply has gone bad from overworking itself and can no longer deliver sufficient power to the card, in which case you'll need a new PSU
3.) Your power supply has delivered too little or too dirty power, which has wrecked the graphics card, in which case you'll need both a new graphics card and a new PSU

So first I would try installing the graphics card in another computer with at least a 550w PSU and seeing if it works, if so then it's probably your power supply, if it still has artifacts then it's the card and you'll need a replacement.

Re: e-Geforce 8800GTS

The Corsair vx550w is a very nice unit for the price, there are cheaper 550w PSUs out there but almost all of them are junk. However, right now the Corsair tx650w is on sale for the same price, $100, $90 after rebate, you might as well get that instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005

I have the Corsair tx750w and it is an excellent power supply, Corsair is the best "bang for the buck" for power supplies in my opinion.

You could try Rivatuner, there are guides for it on the internet: http://www.guru3d.com/category/rivatuner/

Re: e-Geforce 8800GTS

Could be the power supply

I state the spec of the PSU is 500, it might actually be a 450.

But using the PC wizard utility, the 8800 was showing a temperature of 52 degrees Celsius and the 12v was running at 11.77, the 9300GS I put in which is a budget card, is showing a temperature of 42 celsius with a 11.94 running on the 12v line.

It could be simply not getting enough power, the fan seems to run slower then what it should on the 8800. As of right now though I cannot get the 8800 to boot into regular windows, I can boot it into Safemode and all but thats it, still seeing artifacts on the right side of the screen.

Re: e-Geforce 8800GTS

Almost certainly the power supply. You'll need a more powerful one to run the 8800GTS, the CoolMax may have run it initially but it was under a lot of strain and so can't run at full capacity anymore. Try a different PSU.

Eh, lower quality for the same price. Antec used to make really great power supplies but now they keep switching suppliers, and some of them are really shoddy. It's a crapshoot, no way to know if you'll get a good unit or not.

Re: e-Geforce 8800GTS

This review is from early 2008, to my knowledge around the time or shortly before the time when Antec started its supplier dance: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/526/10
The thing is there's just no way to know if you're going to get a quality unit made by a reputable supplier or a junker. Antec is a great brand overall, but until this supplier nonsense is settled it's hard to recommend their PSUs.

Re: e-Geforce 8800GTS

tried a 650w PSU, same problem, seem it got worse with that PSU then the 450 one.

and since EVGA apparently cant honor their "Lifetime warranty" by adding in more obstacles to go through then congress, due to the fact I got it off ebay, I got a useless 8800 laying around now.

Re: e-Geforce 8800GTS

Ouch. Which particular 650w PSU? Though if it didn't work with that then I suppose it was a fault with the card, or else running it on too weak of a power supply damaged it. Was the unit new from ebay or used?

Re: e-Geforce 8800GTS

the new PSU unit was the one I linked of the bestbuy one, the 650w antec.

the Video Card I got was from ebay and it was new, with all the stuff in the box, I think the seller got them for the game that came with it or something, he had a bunch of them that was open box, lasted over a year, EVGA's warranty policy is a joke, never had problems with BFG, if I find a BFG card I am snatching it up.

EVGA pretty much lies to you when you try for RMA, first email saying it exceeded its 1 year warranty (when its a lifetime warranty), then its they cant honor warranty from 3rd party sellers (ebay) even after the selection for registering products LIST ebay, and its just a huge mess.

Re: e-Geforce 8800GTS

Hm, I've heard a lot of praise for EVGA's warranty policies, maybe I should do some more research and revise those opinions. However, if the card was open box that means that it was recertified after being reported RMA, so there is no warranty on it, or a much shorter one, than the standard lifetime warranty.

Re: e-Geforce 8800GTS

not sure, it was so long ago, not even sure the video card was originally an RMA returned.

I got one huge run around though about it, basically telling me I had to register the product within 30 days of purchase, they give an option to upload the receipt (dunno if that matters), before they extend it from 1 year warranty to 3 years.
