[ask] GPU upgrade, worser gameplay
hello, just 2 d point, here is my old pc spec (bought 2006):
proc pentium-d 805 2,66ghz mobo gigabyte ga-8i945pl-g ram 2gb pc6400 hdd seagate 160gb gigabyte ati radeon x600 128mb -> hd4650 1gb 128bit 400w psu (no brand) now this is the problem: at first, with x600 i can play cs:source, also pes2009 1024x768 low at reasonable fps, but ever since i change my GPU to hd4650 the gameplay worser than before, everything seems slower, it even takes longer time to boot up! fyi i have uninstalled the old driver completely and replace it with the new driver supplied. when i changing back to x600, evrything back to normal, anybody telling me what's the problem? soon i'll change my psu with AcBel E2 470w (combined +12v rail 26A), is that enough? or is that any possibility that hd4650 bus architecture (pci-ex 2.0) cannot work well on my mobo which had pci-ex 1.0a bus? need solution asap here, sorry for my bad english |

Re: [ask] GPU upgrade, worser gameplay
The 4650 can theoretically run on a 400w power supply, but for any PCIe graphics card we recommend a +12V rail with at least 26A, while the stock one you have probably has a lot less. The card is probably getting too little current to run reliably, which would explain your poor performance. As for a power supply, the AcBell would work but I would suggest a PC Power and Cooling Silencer 500w if you have the money: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703015 Higher quality and reliability, in my opinion. The power supply *should* fix your problem and bring your performance back to where it was and higher, but if it doesn't come back here and tell us.

Re: [ask] GPU upgrade, worser gameplay
Ouch. Try sending the card back to the store/manufacturer for a replacement, you might have gotten a faulty one.

Re: [ask] GPU upgrade, worser gameplay
I just ordered a Sapphire ATI RADEON HD4750(1gig) my XP system- 4g ram, INTEL C2D CPU 2.6ghz ish, and a 460W cheap PSU. It seems to be running very badly which I think is due to my PSU underpowering my system. I used to have an Radeon X1950xtx but that constantly had artifacts and ran games very choppy. I tried FarCry 2 and Oblivion (a do-able feat for the PC) on differnt gfx settings-highest, high, and low- each gave a terrible FPS high 7-10fps and only 20 max on lowest settings. Could I please have some advice on how to sort this out, and some reccomendations for PSU's that will run the system well enough to have these games on full. Thanks!

Re: [ask] GPU upgrade, worser gameplay
Definitely your power supply. This one should run the 4750 beautifully, with power to spare: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=Corsair%20650 $99.99, $79.99 after rebate.

Re: [ask] GPU upgrade, worser gameplay
Yeah, you guys in Britain always get hosed on prices. However, keep in mind that things online are usually cheaper than buying at traditional brick and mortar stores. Ebuyer.com is usually pretty good. This unit should be adequate: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132563 £64 including VAT, that comes to about US$105, about what we'd pay in the states.

Re: [ask] GPU upgrade, worser gameplay
You shouldn't be trying to run Farcry 2 on max settings with a 4750--it isn't *that* high end a card. Try dropping details to high on a 1280x800 resolution, AA x4, no AF. Your frame rate should shoot up to ~40fps, give or take ten, I'm not sure on the 4750s exact benchmark performance. But yeah, if you wanted a good framerate on maximum settings you would need at least a 4850.
The good news is, with what you have you should be able to play Farcry on reasonable settings with a good framerate, while the ATI x600 would probably barely handle it at all. And with that PSU, in the future you could upgrade to as high as a Radeon 4850 (or the Radeon 5000 equivalent, if those are out by then), though we'd prefer at least 600w for that card.

Re: [ask] GPU upgrade, worser gameplay
Just been down to the place I bought the PC & parts- they gave us an nVidea 8400gs card to see if it was incompatibility with the MB. I realise it's not a great card, but 3fps (no AA) on Furmark benchmark test? I've deleted all the old drivers reinstalled the new ones and the current card (Radeon HD4850) still only gives 30FPS avrge on no AA, and 17FPS avrge on 8x AA. The only components left that I haven't changed now are CPU and MB... If it IS a software issue, what else could it be?

Re: [ask] GPU upgrade, worser gameplay
That's very, very weird. What are the exact models of your motherboard and CPU?
