Re: LiveKernelEvent

Hi Dean, welcome to TSF

Remove the side panel from your computer case and post back with the details from the PSU label (make/model and amps for +12V). Not all 500W PSUs are equal in terms of quality. Cheap generic ones can be the equivalent of a 300W unit (not suitable for an HD4850).

Go into BIOS and note all the temperatures and voltages. Then reboot and run SpeedFan in the background while playing a fullscreen game. After a few minutes, alt-tab back to SpeedFan and take a screenshot of the temperatures and voltages so we can compare the idle and stressed readings.

If SpeedFan doesn't show the graphics card temperature (GPU), use RivaTuner.

Re: LiveKernelEvent

Do you have the BIOS and SpeedFan temperatures and voltages?

I can't find any details for a fsf500-60gln PSU. Does it have a manufacturer's name on the label?

What does it say for +12V?

Your label will look similar to the one below:

Re: LiveKernelEvent

The two +12V lines (18A each) combine to give an approximate total of 28A (80% of 36).

This is borderline for a high-end PCIE graphics card like the HD4850, although Forton is a good make. Also, if the PSU is over a year old, its power output will have decreased slightly.

If possible, try and borrow a good quality 650W PSU to test.

When you were installing all those drivers, did you uninstall the graphics driver and reboot into VGA mode before installing the newer one? This is to avoid driver conflicts.

Re: LiveKernelEvent

Replace the new RAM with your old RAM to see if the new sticks are faulty. You could also run memtest, but as this takes a few hours, try the old sticks first.

If this doesn't fix it, update your motherboard chipset drivers and reboot. Then uninstall your graphics driver, reboot into VGA mode, disable antivirus, install the latest graphics driver and reboot to complete.

Do you have any links to the new parts you bought?

Re: LiveKernelEvent

Do you have a link to the new RAM you bought? There's a fair chance that this is the cause of your problem. Also, I would use a higher quality PSU.

To run memtest, you need to remove all the sticks of RAM except one. If you try to test more than one stick at a time, it can give false errors.

The heatsink is the big lump of metal that sits between the CPU and fan. It spreads the heat generated by the CPU over its large surface area to help reduce the temperature. Without a heatsink, the fan would not be able to keep the CPU cool enough by itself.

I'm not sure what you've read about the heatsink being involved in the LiveKernelEvent problem. The only thing I can think of is to reapply some good quality thermal paste to the heatsink to reduce the CPU temperature, and make sure it's firmly clipped onto the motherboard, but I can't see how that is relevant to your problem.

Re: LiveKernelEvent

If it was my computer, I wouldn't use anything less than a 650W PSU from a good quality manufacturer. Looking at the technical details for smaller PSUs and your system requirements, you could probably get away with a smaller unit, but the difference in price between a 550W and 650W is so small that it's not worth risking a 550W.

The Corsair 650W (52A/+12V) is very popular at the moment, and is good value for money.

Have the computer properly tested by your tech before buying any new hardware. There are a number of possible causes for your problem.

Re: LiveKernelEvent

If they don't have an HD4850 in stock, get them to order one. It shouldn't take more than a couple of days. I wouldn't accept a 9600GT, as it's nowhere near as good as the 4850. Google some reviews and comparison tests for the 2 cards.

Re: LiveKernelEvent

The HD4830 and 4850 are very similar. The 4850 has clock speeds of 625 and 993 compared to the 4830's 575 and 900, making it slightly quicker.

Both cards support DirectX 10.1, pixel/vertex shader models 4.1 and have 800 shader processors, so they are both capable of playing modern graphically-intensive games at good framerates.

You should be able to overclock it to about the same level as the stock 4850. Use RivaTuner to increase the clock speeds gradually to avoid overheating, and keep an eye on temperatures and PSU voltages while gaming until you're sure it's all ok.

Good choice on the Sapphire. Other makes are available, but Sapphires tend to use higher quality components (meaning they overclock well), and run cooler.
