[SOLVED] XFX 9800GT Blurred text in XP

I recently upgraded my graphics card from a 7600GT to the 9800GT from XFX. In games everything looks great, but in windows it is very hard to read text.

The best way to describe how it looks is that it looks as if a screenshot has been taken of my desktop and then compressed into jpeg format and Im given that to look at.

If I drop the resolution down to 1024x768 everything becomes sharp again, but anything above that is blurred.

My LCD monitor is 1600x1050 native resolution and the 7600GT was clear as a bell at that resolution on the desktop.

Any one got any ideas whats wrong?

processor: Athalon X2 dual 3800+
memory: 4GB DDR2
power: Jentech JNP-700
monitor: Asus vw202s
motherboard: cant remember atm (in work)

i have that monitor and card and it works ok but its at 1680 1050 32 bit drive 8.15.11.8618

Hi smeagan, welcome to TSF

Please take a screenshot of your 1600x1050 desktop, and one of the 1024x768 desktop. Attach both to your next reply.

When you upgraded the card, did you uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver?

Have you enabled ClearType? Start > Control Panel > Display > Appearance tab > Effects button > Screen Fonts dropdown menu.

Have you changed anything in the nvidia control panel from default?

When I try taking screenshots, it takes the uncorrupted data from the buffer.

i.e. If I set the resolution to 1600x1024 and take the screenshot, then view the screenshot under 1024x800 the image looks perfect.

When the card was updated, I uninstalled the previous card and shut the pc down to swap cards.

Before Installing the new card, I ran a driver sweeper to clean out the previous drivers.

The card was then installed with the latest drivers from xfx website (redirects to nvidia)

Following macroman's suggestion, I have tried 1680x1050 which looks perfect, but I wasnt happy with having to use that exact resolution to have non-blurred text since I have noticed the same thing happening in some games which dont allow custom resolutions.

So I have returned the card and reverted to my old 7900gt while I look for a good deal on a similar standard ati card.

Hi.

I just bought this card and had the same problem, it seems the DVI-VGA converter that comes with the card is the problem and I solved it by switching the DVI-VGA converter that comes with the card with another one I had.

I realise that it's too late to help you since you already returned your card but the solution is now there for anyone else having this problem.

Hi Beyrone, welcome to TSF, and thanks for posting.

I've always used the converter that comes with the graphics card and never had to buy a new one. I've got about 10 of them lying around and they all work.

Have you got the XFX card or one from another manufacturer (eg MSI, EVGA, PNY)?

Do you know if this is a common problem with XFX cards in general or just the 9800?

Mine was by PNY but the problem was identical in all respects.

This is my first card by Nvidia so I wouldn't know, sorry. ^^
