New Video Card

Hi All
I hope someone can help me. Consider me an avid computer used but stupid.
I have the following
Dell 4300 with Intel p4 512 mb memory
It has a (video/graphics?) card called
16 mb ATi Rage 128 Ultra
I would like to replace this card as it does not perform well for gaming.
It has been suggested that I get a ATI radeon 9600xt .
I was told I need to find out the following
Is your motherboard AGP compatible and which AGP standard is it compatible with. Does your computer have only a PCI slot and no AGP Slot.

Can someone tell me where to look to find this info ?
If I find that my machine is AGP compatible will the ATI radeon 9600 xt card work in my machine ?

thanx in advance for your kind assistance

If you download Everest and run it, it will tell you what type of motherboard you have (it may even go into detail on expansion slots...e.g. pci, agp, etc). If you post the name of your motherboard here we can find the manual for it and tell you what type of card would work.

Well it appears you have 1agp 4x slot (might be in use but if you get this new card you will just replace the old one).

The 9600xt should work just fine in there. Just make sure when you order, the card you order says "agp".

Your system's specs can be found HERE

Video Cards

Hi Elf & thanx for your kind help so far.

Well now that I know the ATI Radeon 9600 XT card will work. Im at a loss to know how to figure out which one to buy. If you look here

http://www.pricewatch.com/ & enter the card into the search bar it returns an amazing amount of (evidently) the same cards only from different sources with prices fron nominal to outrageous. I have no proble paying for the right card but I really want to make sure I get the right card.

So now I have 2 more silly questions for you.
Are all these cards the same & just priced by where it is purchased from ?
Is there a better card that would run on my machine ?

I use the machine for mostly gameing (usually Tiger Woods 2005 or simulation games such as Railroad Tycoon). Other than that I mostly read mail & surf the web & such. As I dont work in the winter (I live in Michigan Upper Peninsula) this machine is my biggest hobby. So if it seems like im overly cautious I probably am but I want to make sure to get the proper parts as I am not very up on the hardware parts of running a machine.

Again thanx for you help

There are better cards out there that would be better, but you're looking at upwards of 500$

Often different manufacturers will have slighty different prices, as will individual stores.

If you want the best, then you should get either the ati x850xt or the geforce 6800gt

I'll go into more detail when I get home (at class right now)
