Re: Has my 8800GTX just died?
oh ok, cool. In a game such as say Crysis/FarCry 2 how much of a framerate difference would there be between the two cards at 1680x1050 at high/very high settings? Enough to justify the extra £20-30?

Re: Has my 8800GTX just died?

Thanks for your help and time, very greatful. I'll update the thread with weather it works, or not. |

Re: Has my 8800GTX just died?
Would my psu not be up to taking the 4870 at all? Because according to PSU calculator, my system would draw 406w at peak load with a 4870, which is well within the 520w. It's just the 4870s seem like better value from the benchmarks.

Re: Has my 8800GTX just died?
seems I get a 4890 for the same price as a GTX 260 216, which would be best out of those two?
or for the lower price band I can get a 4870 1GB for the same price as a GTS 250 1GB, which would be the best out of those two? And would my PSU be enough to power either/both of the ATi cards above? |

Not trying to jump in but I thought this could be helpful to give some numbers to look at.

Re: Has my 8800GTX just died?
Should be fine then. Why so high? Seems very over the top compared with all the information I've previously received over the years. In fact the Dell XPS PCs actually used to use 380W PSUs with 8800GTXs and they worked fine.

Re: Has my 8800GTX just died?
most pre-built computers are built to a price
they only need to see out the warranty period after that it's your problem not the builders

I guess. I've got the card anyway, and I can't work out what to do with the S/PDIF cable that comes with it. Can anybody explain what I do with it and what it does? I've never had one before.
I think I've got from googling that I only need it if I want audio output from a HDMI cable, which I don't I'm just using DVI and a seperate line out from my sound card. Last edited by dai; 07-03-2009 at 07:22 PM. |

Re: Has my 8800GTX just died?
Hey Dai,
I relaize the figures on the above link are misleading in regards to the 450W PS. The thing that the problem many people have with the numbers is that they use the wrong ones. I have found the the amperage seems to be the number to watch. Most of the newer cards require substantially more amperage than previous cards in order to operate. There are still a lot of very large PSs out that boast 750W or more but still cant run in a stable way due to not having the ability to give the necessary push of sustained power. Im not trying to tell you this actually as Im sure that you know, but rather writing this for the future readers of this post to help them to understand what they need to look at when they have a question or a situation regarding this matter. |

Re: Has my 8800GTX just died?
It has a pretty good amount but it still falls short of the 30A reccomended in the above link.
Below is a link with the specs of the HX520 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139001 |
