Automatic video card throttling

I'm curious if there is a way to go into like a 2d mode when I'm just browsing the web, watching movies, etc. instead of always running full out. I don't like that my video card is running as hard when playing Left4dead as when I'm watching youtube. If there was a way to throttle it, even if it's not automatic, I just have to set it, then that would be awesome. I can watch youtube off of on board video cards, so why do I need a radeon 4870 to google search something?

Thanks if there is anything like this out there.

Re: Automatic video card throttling

Your 4870 doesn't work as hard as when it's not gaming. The gpu's power will only be used like 1 or 2% when your just browsing the web. Just like a cpu. The gpu works harder when it's actually in use but doesn't need to be throttled when your not using it's full power.

You can use riva tuner and manually set it to lower clock speeds when your not gaming. But once again you don't really have to.

The fact that the card is running hot enough to need a fan is what bugs me, there is no fan on an on board video card, and I don't want passive cooling either.

Re: Automatic video card throttling

Yea but that's like saying because a pentium 1 or 2 doesn't need a fan an idle quad core wouldn't need one either. The card still generates heat when it's idle , but isn't actually working hard.

As I said you can under clock it with rivatuner and turn down fans speeds but there really no reason to.

That's exactly what I want. Why does my video card need to perform like a 4870 when it's doing nothing that an on board card can't do?

Re: Automatic video card throttling

It's not performing like a 4870 when it's doing nothing , because it's doing nothing. It's just sitting there staying cool until you do something. I honestly do not see where your going with this thread.
