Freezing Issues with colored pixels appearing on screen
Hi to all,
I recently paid big bucks for the following 'initial' build: Core 2 Quad Q9650, Asus P5Q3 Mobo, 6GB Kingston 1333 Mhz DDR3, Asus EAH 4870 1GD5 PCIE, 650W Master power supply and installed Vista Premium 32 bit (bought it from the retailer itself as part of the new build). It's been 1 week since I brought it home (Monday 15.06.09) and it has been back to the store 4 times having spent the last 6 days there. Brought it home. Installed Vista(bought it from retailer itself as part of new build). The machine kept freezing - at random times. Took it back. I was told that the mobo's bios had to be updated and said there should not be any problems now(got charged 70 AUD as updating a firmware was not part of the hardware warranty). Took it back home. Clean installed Vista. But the machine seemed to be freezing more than ever. Took it back. They said that there was now a compatibility issue between the mobo, the RAM and the graphics card. So they swapped my mobo (restocking fee, plus added fee of new mobo which suddenly had gone up by 40 AUD as compared to the stated online price) and put in a GIGABYTE GA-EP45T-UD3LR (which they initially wanted to sell to me instead of my Asus mobo choice). Anyway, picked up the system, came back home, switched on and the freezing frenzy continued. I also noticed this time around, when it froze, there were colored pixels stretching across part of the screen. I have a hunch that it might be the graphics card causing the havoc which is why I posted here. But I am not an expert and hence any advice in that regards would be hugely appreciated. I have to take it back there but I really feel I am being led here. I am heavily frustrated. Could somebody, anybody please please please help me with resolve this problem? :( |

The brand name of the power supply is Master. 650 Watts. I had initially picked out a Thermaltake ToughPower 650 Watts. The guys at the place where I ordered all parts didn't have one and recommended this one as they used this one with the servers itself and it worked fine.
I am currently re-installing the Vista. Will keep updating posts with what happens unless I hear of a specific thing to look for during that setup. Cheers. PC froze again during the setting up of Windows Vista 32bit. Restarted the machine. PC froze again during installation. I may have a spare graphics card lying around. Will give that a try and see. Re: Freezing Issues with colored pixels appearing on screen
the shop that sold you all the parts must not really pay attention to what he's selling ppl, as i saw that your running 6 gig's of 1333 DDR3 ram and he sold you Vista 32 bit software.
hey Dai would the fact that it's a 32 bit version of vista be causing the problems while installing when it tries to detect the ram and it's seeing 6 gig's..... just a thought. Last edited by jonathan68; 06-22-2009 at 06:27 AM. |

Re: Freezing Issues with colored pixels appearing on screen
I have removed one of the RAM sticks bringing it down to 4GB. Installed everything again and for some time everything seemed to be going quite smoothly (left the pc by itself) but as I started opening a few windows and running a few processes, it froze. The pc is now back at the retailers since yesterday. Waiting to hear on them. I also found out on some posts that ASUS made a statement in regards to the utilities that come together with the gp (they said not to install them as they found out the software was causing some problems). Whether it's true or coincidence, I am not sure, however when I did not install the utilities, things were running smoother (less freezes) but the problem was still very much there.
As to Dai's comments, I am wondering if that was meant for me, the pc or the retailer...? I will definitely update as I get some feedback from the retailer. |
