Newly acquired GX270 - video card puzzle

Hi. I have been using a GX260 (2GHz) with an low-profile AGP Nvidia FX-5200 card quite successfully. Because my young son bought and wanted to play FIFA 09 and the GX260 wasn't fast enought, I bought a secondhand GX270 (2.8GHz) which looks pretty similar to the GX260. However, when transferring the video card to the GX270, I found that although it slotted the card into the same kind of slot in the exactly the same place on the motherboard (the layout seems identical in both), the end of the card was almost an inch shy of the back of the computer and so I can't connect the lead to the monitor to it.

What gives? Also, next to it is a space for expansion cards. Are these slots PCI and, if so, could I slot in a PCI video card and would that work.

Finally, looking up in these pages on GX270, I came across references to the power supply not being up to for 'modern video cards'. My FX-5200 did OK, so what gives? All advice plus any extra hints would be very welcome.

The 5200 may be proprietary to the 260. Is it similar to any other 5200 you've seen? As for the power supply not being addiquet for modern cards , this is true. The 5200 is by far not modern however so it should be fine on that machines power supply. However , the 5200 will have a tough time with FIFA 09.

Re: Newly acquired GX270 - video card puzzle

Well, could you advise me.

1) Am I right in thinking my connection on the GX270 is still AGP?

2) The GX270 has PCI expansion slots. Would it be OK to get a PCI video card for one of the slots instead? Would that function correctly?

3) My FX-5200 is 128Mb. That has so far been fine for all my lad's other games (Lego Star Wars etc) but you reckon 128Mb will not be enough for FIFA 09. What would be the minimum for FIFA 09?

4) Why in the GX270 would the card I have be half an inch shy of the back aperture (making connection difficult) whereas it was flush on the GX260? The look very similar inside, alghough admittedly I haven't done any measurements.

Re: Newly acquired GX270 - video card puzzle

The 260 is shown to have an agp slot so it is agp.

As for pci cards , don't bother if you have agp. The regular pci bus is about 8 times slower.

As for the minimum to play fifa 09 , pretty much what your doing (using a 5200 in a gx270) would be the minimum to get it physically running.

The 260 however might be using a half length card which would make it shorter than a normal card. Safe to say though if the card doesn't fit then , it just doesn't fit. You could take a saw to the back panel if you wanted and just make the monitor cable fit if you don't want to buy a new card.
