Issues with upgrading my video card driver.

Today I purchased the new Sims 3 video game. When I went to play, however, I was having issues with the game freezing my computer several times, to the point I kept having to reset. I searched around online and found suggestions that I might try upgrading my video driver if I never have before (I haven't, and it's more than several years old). I followed the directions on this site to upgrade the driver:

http://www.ehow.com/how_5572_upgrade-drivers-video.html

I have (had) an ATI Radeon X300. I went to the ATI Radeon site and downloaded this:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...1&lang=English

After following all the instructions and resetting my computer numerous times, I am getting this error when I start my computer:

(Sorry if it looks funny, I saved it in paint because I didn't want to open photoshop.)

Also, when I scroll through webpages it is jerky, if that makes sense. Please help me fix this? I just want to be able to play the Sims 3. After all, I did spend $50 on the damn thing...

Oh, if it helps, I run Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 8400.

Thanks!

Re: Issues with upgrading my video card driver.

First, make sure you run the uninstaller for all ati products in the add and remove section. Reboot and install the latest drivers for your card after the restart. And if that doesnt cut it, uninstall the drivers and boot into safe mode and run drivercleaner pro and remove any traces of the ati drivers.

check back to tell me if it works...

Re: Issues with upgrading my video card driver.

Thank you for the help... I hope it doesn't offend you, but I think I'd prefer to wait until one of the moderators or forum regulars offers a suggestion. I don't mean to be rude about it, but I've had an issue in the past with a new user making suggestions that weren't safe for my computer. Honestly, no offense. :)

Re: Issues with upgrading my video card driver.

Im not new, just havent been using this forum, but at the least you can run the uninstall and reinstall the new drivers, did you at least do that? Thats perfectly safe.

Plus I would like to see a mod back me up on this, its at least the first thing you should always try when having issues with drivers.

Re: Issues with upgrading my video card driver.

I actually have to go to bed now, but I will try it in the morning if no one else has made any suggestions. Thanks!

Re: Issues with upgrading my video card driver.

So when I woke up this morning, I turned the computer on and came to this page. I am no longer getting the warning error, and the internet page loads properly. Does that mean the driver is working correctly now? Could anyone let me know how I could check that? Thanks!

EDIT: I went to play the game (Sims 3) and it loads and everything. But the graphics don't look so good, I swear they looked better with the old driver yesterday. I even upped the settings. Shouldn't they look better with a new version of the driver? This is so confusing!
