Radeon X1950 IceQ 3 - Red Light

Hi, gang. I should preface this with the fact I'm an utter newbie in terms of actually getting into my tower and playing around. Please... be gentle.

I just upgraded my video card from the Radeon HD 3450 to the X1950. But when I try to connect to my monitor via DVI, it doesn't recognize (the monitor says "No VGA Cable Attached"). I then saw that the X1950's red light fires up immediately upon starting the system, and it doesn't go out.

Here's my setup:

Video Card: HIS Radeon X1950 IceQ 3 Turbo
CPU: 2.50 Ghz Intel Core2 Quad Q8300
Motherboard: Dell Inc. 0FM586
RAM: 6 Gigs

Any help at all is greatly appreciated. Feel free to condescend, as long as it makes me smarter! :)

What power supply are you using? Did you plug the power connector into the card?

Re: Radeon X1950 IceQ 3 - Red Light

I'm using the motherboard's internal power supply, which I'm rapidly discovering is probably the issue. How do I find my motherboard's power output?

The motherboards internal power supply? Motherboards do not provide there own power. Or output any power. What I need is the make/model/ and wattage of the power supply thats in the machine.

It's an Inspiron 530. I believe the power supply outputs 350 watts.

It's a Liteon, model number PS-9351-2. Output is 350w.

My PSU doesn't have the 6-in to hook into the X1950. Is there some kind of adapter, or do I need an entirely new PSU?

Re: Radeon X1950 IceQ 3 - Red Light

Yea that power supply isn't good enough for that card. The card needs a decent quality 500w or higher with 26 amps on the 12v rail and to be 80+ certified.

Also , if the card is brand new you should consider taking it back for a different one. While the x1950 is an upgrade in terms of speed , it's a downgrade in terms of supported technologies. The card is about 4 or 5 years old and actually is no longer supported with drivers updates. Also because it's older it uses a lot of power and doesn't deliver as much performance as newer cards that use less power. Something like a 4670 would be more ideal.
