[SOLVED] signes of overheating ? gtx 285
Hi im not sure what my prob is so im posting here as what i think it is is my vid or cpu overheating .. I was playing rfactor for hours then some f4 than switched to cod waw, i started noticing rippiling eletrical looking waves going thru the monitor along with a slight buzing sound thru the speakers as if you were holding a magnit or a cell phone to the screen or somthing that would cause interference, they got worse so i exited from the game, the ui screens were not clear, kinda fuzzy with courption then i noticed it on the desktop as well ,not as sevre but still waving from low right to upper left kinda and thru the middle .. the sound is like a humming buz that goes along with the waves of courption then as it cools down it seems to go away but i can still see a slight signe of it in the far corners bairly waving , its like a dirty connection or somthing .. wierd .. it just started ,as all these things do, out of the blue after a week of stable use ..
I have recently upgraded from XP with a gig of ram and the 8800 gt to vista 64 with 8 gigs of ram ,new powersupply 680w from a 550w, new nvid gtx 285 , new sound card creative pro fx gamming card in the small express slot .also i upgraded the chip from the amd 4600 2x64 to the amd 6000 2x64 .. so now im thinking it could be any of these ,, The pc was running great for days now ! My first guess is tht its getting to hot ! i still have my old case with a 3 3" fans exiting the case 1 on the side 2 on the back below the ps . then the vids fan set to full 100% and the cpu/ fan , ps with its own fan going out the back .. Im thinking i need a new box with BIG fans out the top and sutch ... Im running the program that came with the vid card that shows graphs , gpu temps ectt it was staying in th mid 60's and mid 40's on the desk top ,i guess you can over clock your vid card here but i leave it at defalt "low" except for the vid fan .. but what about the cpu ? dosent it have failsafe hi temp shut off or somthing like that ? i know theres a way to check the cpu temp but i cant remember it right now , maybe i screwed up the chip install with the thurmal greese or somthing ?? its been over 9 days with no isseues untill now .. ive seen vid cards go out in the past and its ushualy collor and lines not like the eletrical looking prob im having , the sound along with it is strange ,but then i dont know alot about these things ... Ive never seen this type of courption so i dont know what to do .. lol My sys ,windows vista ultra 64 sp1, asus m2n32 delux mobo ,8gigs ddr2, ath 2x64 6000 duallcore cpu , nvid GTX 285 , soundblaster fx gaming card "express slot",, 500 gig hd with 2nd 80 gig for storage 28" hanns moniter Thanks in advance for any help here .. |

Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
What is the brand and model of the power supply?
The GPU is in the normal range what does it report for temps while gaming? Try Speed fan for the volts and temps> http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php |

Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
The flame means nothing in speedfan anything over 52c gets a flame that's probably the video card which will run up to 90+c without damage. Whats it reporting for CPU temp?
The log file from Speedfan leaves a lot to be desired the program is only good to use as a quick reference and not to be relied on, but rather a starting point. What your describing sounds more like a power issue with the power supply. |

Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
ok , its worse this morning ;-( the lines are thru the tool bar at bottom ,basickly i can see it where any transperency and dark or black screens are and i think i can smell it now ! grrrrrr.. its like snow on your TV kinda .. The cpu temp via the first screen of speedfan says -64C ,internal is at 29C ,remote is at -64C then Temp 1 under says 40C ,core is at 42C blue down arrows are on the cpu int and remote ,green checks are on the temp 1 and core Gpu temp (at verry top) says 48C with another temp 1 under it at 40C .
so im hiping at this point its a bad PS as that a pretty easy fix > ?? |

Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
Yes uninstall speedfan it isn't a good fit for your system.
To get the GPU temp try GPUz> http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...-Z_v0.2.8.html Core temp for the CPU> http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ Do you have access to a digital volt meter? If it is the PSU it's not hard to change. |

Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
ok ill try those 2 but do i need another program for the gpu temp ? it's being read by the evga riva tuner app? [or what ever it
s called] i have it set to run up in the corner while gaming .. temps are alwase around the 65C to 69C while playing 40C to 45C at desktop its the cpu i cant get a reading on or do you sugest bolth ? .. , and no i dont have a d-volt meeter .. im hoping it hasent cooked my new vid card ![]() its like terring but not , more like eletrical noise with the waves/bands its becoming worse and worse im seeing it more .... would the 680 ps be strained by the nv 285 all maxed out ? im thinking it might have cooked it , its less than 2 weeks old .. im ordering a new antec case and a new 1000w ps but if the card is toast its not going to matter ..lol @%$#@%$ thanks again for your help ... |

Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
Riva tuner will work fine for the temps. If the card is getting worst it's either the ram on the card failing or the PSU 680w is a little small but it's more an issue of the quality of the PSU and if it outputs clean stable power at full load, Corsair 850TX or HK1000 would be my choice for GTX285 or 295.

Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
what do you think of this psu > Antec TruePower Quattro TPQ-1000 1000W Continuous Power ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified ModuAntec
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371012 and this case ? Twelve Hundred Black Steel ATX Full Tower http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129043 i hope these work .. lol i already ordered them .. and i filled out an RMA for the vid card incase its toast .. ![]() in the overclocking program that came with the vid card can i also find cpu temps ? the program has shaders ,gpu sliders ectt.. but when you click on the little wrench icon it puts on the tool bar it says riva tuner .. Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
The 300 is a nice case almost like a 900 without the window, but I don't like Antec PSU's any longer RMA process in a nightmare and I've had to use too often

Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
ya its suposed to be one of the cooler box out their ... summers comming here and its not getting any cooler , i have 7days to send back my vid card if its toast ,i guess ill have to wait and put the new box/psu togeather and see if the problum is still there, would improper possition of the heatsync on the cpu cause this kind of noise/interference? . wouldent the cpu just shut off if it reached to hi temps? i also have it set to alarm if temps get to high, i did read that amd's will keep going and burn up the mobo with ti where intel simply shuts its self off .. geezzz ... sry for all the posts im just frustrated that my %$&* dont work !! lol and its friday so nothing will happen for me over the weekend ..
thanks .. kro .

Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
If the CPU heat sink was loose it would mostly likely shut down but have a look at the temps with Coretemp> http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Re: signes of overheating ? gtx 285
I might have found the coulpret ! , i opend the box and looked around and found a melted fan connecton plug down by hard drive #2 (old 80gig) I unpluged the HD and moved the wires ,inspecting to see if it had shorted luckly it all is in order and supplying voltage to the fan <side exaust fan> then i changed moniter cables using the HDI instead of the adaptor/ and NO COURPTION ! im looking hard trying to see faint signes of what was there but its clean !! im thinking the old HD was about to go and adding heat to the whole pc ive installed the temp pgrm and have temps of 45C bolth cores .. im going to try some gameing and see what happends ! but so far im happy to not see the wierd eletrical waves pulcing thru the video !! IM holding off on cod waw until my new case and psu arive just to avoid a possible melt down .. keep your finguers crossed for me !!
thx lol
