Vertical stripes on a PCI-Express Gainward GeForce 6600GT GS

I recently upgraded the motherboard, CPU, RAM and GPU in an old AGP system with a Radeon 7500 to a Gainward GeForce 6600GT GS and an Asus A8V-E Deluxe PCI-Express motherboard, Socket 939.

Problem is, when I installed the drivers and increased the resolution to 1280x1024x32, I got vertical stripes on the screen:

When I uninstalled the driver, the stripes disappeared, but the resolution remained at 1280x1024x32!

So, with various NVIDIA drivers, those stripes appear, but if I remove the driver and reboot, they are gone.

I've tried a number of things:

- I have tried the latest official driver from NVIDIA, the one that came with the Gainward card, and the latest beta
- I have changed the resolution and refresh rate (which makes it worse (when increasing the resolution), or exactly the same)
- I installed the 4in1 VIA drivers from the CD that came with the motherboard
- Tried to disable hardware acceleration

I've also tried to make sure that the card is firmly in place. But I guess that it wouldn't work without drivers if it wasn't.

I'm really out of ideas, at least for now.

Has anyone else esperienced this? What might be the cause, and does anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix it?

I was so looking forward to playing HL2 and D3 at decent speeds... :(
