power supply

160-Watt 4/2A STLS Power Supply R2
this is my psu. i need a more wattage. someone told me to make sure the psu was a standard atx before i got anything, whats that? this is all i know about the psu. gateway support doesn't tell me anything. can i just get an antec power supply and put it in?

Hi,

I hate to be the one to rain on your parade (only kidding), but Gateway and other proprietary makers manufacture their products so you HAVE to use their products or they don't fit the case.

It would actually be cheaper (since they charge about three times as much as anyone else) to buy a new case with a decent power supply. A power supply that has only 160 watts is so small that you are severely limited in what you can put in your computer. That is another thing, proprietary manufacturer's only put a power supply in that is the bare minimum for the retail unit, so if you want to upgrade some components, the power supply won't be able to carry it.

Oh, an Antec probably won't fit a Gateway case. I figured you guessed that, but wanted to make sure I answered your question.

atx standard psu

i contacted gateway and they asured me a standard atx psu would fit in my case ok. thats a big relief and broadens my options.
