6600GT...Is my PSU screaming help?

Just upgraded from a stable system using a FX5700LE (256MG) to a nice shiny new Sparkle 6600GT AGP and now getting the blue screen of death the minute it runs anything in 3D. BSOD seems to appear at random points. I have double checked all connections including the molex on the 6600gt and ensured it had it own lead to the supply (ie not shared).

Accoring to my PSU it should supply 18A on the 12V+ but I've got a feeling that my PSU has been pushed over its limit with the 6600GT...too much of a coincedence.

Can anyone look at my sig and tell me what they think as I know that quite a few users with this card have reported similar problems but no definte answer seems to exist.

Well Jeantech isnt really a brand name and if they say 18A on the +12V rail then its more than likely 12-15.
I would get a brand name PSU with at least 18 - but preferably more on the +12V line. Maybe even one with 2 seperate 12 rails. They arent that expensive anymore.
There are some stores out there that dont charge restocking fees so you are able to bring it back if it turns out not to be the problem.

Definetly the PSU

Evening all,

It is most definetly a PSU problem on the 12V rail not producing enough current. I've systematically unhooked all the devices and tested them with doom3. No BSOD until I hook up my NEC DVD or DVD Rom at voila. These last two are obviously drawing the last amp that my PSU can produce which explains that it was stable until I poppped in the 6600. Don't know how much current this little baby draws but it was obviously enough to send my PSU over the edge.

Curiously 3Dmark also returns a better score too, around 7792.

Any recommendations on a good PSU with around 25Amps or thereabouts on the 12V rail.

Depends on how much you want/ can spend.
I'd suggest:

Antec 480W
OCZ 450W + PSUs
ULTRA X Connect 550W

But of course there are sooo many more......

Ooh yeah....Feel the power baby

No more BSOD.

Most Power supply manufacturers REALLY underate the 12V line even though more equipment has become even more dependant on the 12V line...Fancy numbers on the 3.3 & 5V don't really count for Jack anymore..

These are where you want to be for a decent supply for an AMD setup.
+3.3V = 28A
+5.0V = 30A
+12.0V = 18A <-- 20+ for 6XXX and 96/98XX AGP cards.
+5VSB = 2A-2.5A

The reason is the cards soak up a lot of current and the AGP connector is only spec'd for ~50W at most, most of those cards I mentioned in the list will use 60-120W+ in some cases...the AGP connector cannot keep up with the demand.

Throw in some SATA/SCSI disks & some optical drives and the 12V lines deal with the brunt of the power required by you machine.

It's OK to be ignorant; it's not OK to play stupid. Never assume you are entitled to an answer. You are not.
