Require Radeon 9200 Series Replacement

Hi All,

I am new to forums so I hope I am in the right place to ask a really basic Graphics Card replacement question.

I am currently using an 8 year old self built PC basically comprising an Abit NF7 vs2 motherboard, an ATI Radeon 9200 Series graphics card together with an excellent new 24” Dell 2408WFP Monitor, (after having to return another manufacturers 24” monitor due to atrocious viewing angle problems)! At the moment I am using Windows XP SP 3 Home 32 bit. I don’t really run much in the way of games, but do a lot of photo, video and watch some TV via a TV card of course.

This PC has only ever needed to work on the VGA graphics connection. When I tried to run either of the new monitors on the 9200 DVI socket it was producing very corrupt video, finally putting monitors into ‘standby’ and is very obviously faulty. (VGA is OK). So have decided to replace/upgrade the Graphics Card.

At last the question! As I wish to keep this m/c and eventually build/purchase a much more powerful model if and when finances improve, I am currently considering either of the following replacement cards……

1…Sapphire ATI Radeon 9250 128MB DDR VGA DVI TV Out AGP Card, which I am sure would be OK, but I would much prefer;
2… Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2400Pro 256MB DDR2 VGA DVI TV Out AGP Card.

The question is, this latter card is 64bit, would it be OK in my present 32 bit XP system or do I have to stay with a 32 bit card?

Thanks for any helpful advice/answers!

Re: Require Radeon 9200 Series Replacement

The 32/64 bit has nothing to do with 32 bit xp, if that was the case I'd have a hard time finding an operating system for my 256bit 9800GT card. With agp the only thing is the card has to be compatable with the slot. Abit's NF7 boards have an 8X agp slot, get a matching card and you'll be good to go. Of course, you should check your manual to confirm that, or get a 4X/8X card instead of 8X only, but everywhere I looked showed 8x.
Make sure that the +12volt output from your power supply is at least 18 amps. More is always better too.

Re: Require Radeon 9200 Series Replacement

Thanks 'grimx133', will try the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro and post eventually how it goes. Thanks again for your very prompt and informative reply.

Although I have been playing around with and building computers for some years, one is still learning in this game!!

Re: Require Radeon 9200 Series Replacement

Further to my earlier messages re a new graphics card; I have purchased a Radeon 2400 Pro card and installed its latest ATI drivers. This replaces a faulty Radeon 9200 card. (The DVI connection was u/s). I have had installed for a few months now a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 1100 TV card that with the 9200 card worked fine on its VGA output. The problem at the moment with the new card is that there is continuos flashing of two or three coloured horizontal lines across the TV card screen, not consistant with audio peaks etc. When TV card is not in use, all facilities work normally and well with the 2400. I am also using the latest drivers for my Abit NF7 vs 2 Motherboard, together with the latest version of Hauppauge WinTV 6. I have tried WinTV 7 but that will not install fully with 2400 card but did with the 9200. I have just uninstalled the ATI drivers, so am using basic drivers. Now there is NO flashing across the TV card screen. This is not satisfactory as I cannot adjust in Windows Settings to the native Dell 2408 monitor resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The nearest at the moment I am using is 1600 x 1200 which of course is giving a stretched screen look. Also the redraw speed of the screen in all programs is dreadfully slow. To me there seems to be a clash of the 2400 and the TV card drivers...........HELP, has anyone got any ideas how to get over this one please??? Many thanks if possible. Rexyy

Re: Require Radeon 9200 Series Replacement

Thanks 'Mcninjaguy' for your prompt reply, unfortunately the Option 2 driver you suggested will not install, I get message, 'Severe' .... 'Setup did not find a driver compatable with your current hardware or operating system'... This of course is an AGP graphics card, could this be the reason for the message?

I get the flashing problem with both the 2400 supplied CD driver and the 'latest' available from the ATI site i.e.
'9-4_agp-hotfix_xp32_dd_ccc.exe'

Since yesterday I have tried Windows Update for any later software that could be relevant. After much resetting PC, installing/uninstalling relevant cards and software etc., I have got to a point where I could not even get any TV channels, so at the moment I have removed both Radeon 2400 and the Hauppauge TV cards and have just reinstalled the original 9200 card and its software as at the present time I am at a loss as to what to try next! This is to get back to a basic working m/c. Any positive suggestions would be welcome.....By the way please don't mention rubbish bins!!!!

Re: Require Radeon 9200 Series Replacement

I think that is the reason for the message I did know it said PCIE beside the driver but thought it would be compatible. I was wrong.

Can you do this in order

This is the 9.3 legacy driver. Under the relaease notes it says it suppoert the "2400 series"
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...g=English&rev=

Use driver sweeper to get rid of the old 9200 drivers while it is installed
http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

-shut down- and install 2400 graphics card

-boot up PC-

start in safe mode by pressing f8 and selecting the HDD that has XP on it and boot into safe mode

install the new drivers

restart back in to XP normally

Re: Require Radeon 9200 Series Replacement

Thanks for latest info; can and will try your suggestions in due course, (very busy at the mo).

At the present time making sure that PC and TV card is working as before with the old 9200 card reinstalled.

Unfortunately since the drivers problems I am now getting on startup the 'dreaded' message ;....

"Could not load file or assembly 'MON.Implementation' or one of its dependencies. The System cannot find the file specified".

After a Search neither can I! I have tried one tip, download and install .NET framework 1.1...I have done this to no avail. I beleive it has something to do with ATI drivers? Sorry to keep asking questions, but has anyone got an easyish answer to that one please?

The Hauppauge TV card is working OK as it was before I installed the 2400 card EXCEPT no way can I get the EPG working now. It was originally.
