Computer restarts after 2 mins
I had this problem happen before a long time ago and it seemed to fix itself without me doing much. But the problem is back and I dont know what to do. I have a radeon 4870 and since day 1 its been running very hot (shocking i know). But since everything was working (the first day was the only time i had problems) I didnt change anything. I got a 750 watt power supply that i thought would handle everything okay but I am still stuck with a minicase that my video cards jUST barely fits in.
It started yesterday when i randomly got the wonderful blue screen and my computer restarted. Nothing else happened, i continued using it for a few more hours. Today I turn on my computer, get blue screen after about 3 mins, it restarts. Now everytime i turn it on it will load and go to my desktop but after a couple minutes it just restarts. I oped my case to see if that would make the card cooler and get some dust out but same problem. Safe mode seems to run fine and it doesnt randomly restart (so far, after about 20 mins). I just jumped to the conlcusion that it was my graphics card, was this a logical conclusion? If so then what do I do. If not then what do i do. -Currently I only got two little fans in the case to cool the video card ![]() thanks in advance |

I plan on buying a new case but id like to fix this problem first. so id rather just get a whole new case instead of upgradin this one The can of air got rid of all the dust and everthing but it didnt fix my problem. I still get blue screen and then restart Alright I did everything I could possible do. I plugged it right into the wall with nothing in between, i unplugged everything, inc mouse and keyboard, and the thing still restarted. So now i only see three possibilities. Either send my power supply back to pc power&cooler and get a new one, send my whole pc to a repair place, or do a system restore. What you guys think I should do? If i take this 750w power supply can I put it in an old pc to see if it works? Or would it be a bad test because its a different os and different eerything else. Cuz i do have another computer i could try it on but i dont wanna waste my time if i shouldnt do it. Last edited by dai; 04-19-2009 at 01:35 AM. |

Re: Computer restarts after 2 mins
Uncheck automatically restart. That way the blue screen will stay up instead of restarting. Get the error code 0x000000000 and whatevers at the end. May be slightly different at the start too. Also look for an identified driver ie- *.sys Any specific mention of a file name.
The 4 strings inside the brackets are the parameters, the one outside is the specific bsod itself. Give us more of an idea of what's going on there. That's an excellent psu, it may need to be looked at, but unlikely, at this point. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you...sta_shuts_down

Checking off automatic restart didnt make it stop at the blue screen but i took a picture to get the code.
STOP: 0x0000007F (0x00000008, 0x806D3130, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) I also wasted my time by putting the power supply in the other computer and the problems didnt happen. So its not the power supply. I have no idea what the speedfan temps mean but i decided to put them here anyway. temp1 33 temp2 37 temp3 23 hd0 39 temp1 42 core 7 Did someone move it to this section because they think its the video card? cuz i wasnt aware we made that conclusion. I put in my old power supply and old graphics card and its still happened. So that means the only option i got is to do a system restore to factory settings or figure out what I need to buy a new of. If anyone can figure out what my error message means that would be great.

Re: Computer restarts after 2 mins
Microsoft has a kb article on roughly this bsod, but it applies to xp, not vista.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842465 It has to do with cpu microcode, we need more specs. Cpu and stepping, motherboard make and model. Complete specs would be the thing to post, instead of a bit here and there. Always helps to have an overall idea of what a system contains. I'll continue looking about, and hopefully post again in a bit. edit - check temps and voltages in bios, it is considered the most accurate. Should be in hardware monitoring or pc health, perhaps under the power section. Depends on which bios you have. edit 2 - another MS kb for xp http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137539/

Re: Computer restarts after 2 mins
A vista repair may help.
You can also try running one stick of ram only, in the slot closest to the cpu, and try different sticks, if the first one tried doesn't help. If that improves things, you'd need to run memtest on one stick at a time. Check in device manager for any flags.

Re: Computer restarts after 2 mins
try runnin with just one stick of ram? i guess i could try that. And then do diagnostics tool again? I just planned on doing a system restore to factory settings next.
CPU temp is 48C Ambient temp is 40C , watever that is alright i tried leaving just one stick of ram but then the moniter display woulnt show, so i switch back asap. Last edited by dstn2524; 04-18-2009 at 08:01 PM. |

Alright I sort of got another obstacle. I decided that I wanted to restore the computer to factory settings and I did this a few times with xp and it went well but I have problems with vista. I go to system restore and it says it didnt find any backups on the hard disk or DVDs. So i put in the first dvd (of 3) that i had of a backup that i made about a month after I got my computer and it still said "No valid backup locations could be found." Is there another way for me to do a full system restore? Last edited by dai; 04-19-2009 at 01:38 AM. |

Re: Computer restarts after 2 mins
If you do try a factory restore, it will most likely be a destructive restore, meaning that you will lose any data you don't have backed up. Most are like that, put it back to the state it was when you got it. It doesn't just change settings, it formats and reinstalls the operating system and the programs that came with the computer. Any user added material is lost. Take care of your data, above all.
The cpu temp is warm, warmer than I would like my own machines to be at idle, but it isn't at a dangerous level, certainly not high enough to cause a heat shutdown. Those forms of shutdowns do not normally result in a blue screen also. Have you tried running the computer from a bootable cd, so that windows doesn't load at all? That would help clarify if it's a hardware or vista issue. To start, download the memtest iso file and create a bootable cd. Then run memtest on ram, one stick at a time, for at least two hours. Any errors at all would mean that the stick is not stable. Often a bad stick will give multiple errors very quickly, but errors can also show up later, that's why it needs to be run for a few passes. Look at the label on the hard drive. Download the diagnostic utilities from the drive's manufacturer, seagate, western digital, etc. Same idea, should be an iso file to make a bootable cd. Here's the sticky on how to create a bootable cd from an iso file. How to Burn a Bootable ISO File Have you tried safe mode? Minimal drivers, so booting into that may allow your computer to run. Give that a whirl, start up pressing f8 to get to the boot selection screen and pick either plain safe mode, or safe mode with networking. See if it crashes there.

Re: Computer restarts after 2 mins
doing a system restore because ive actually been wanting to do it for a while cause of some software problems i had. I was aware that I would lose everything and made some backups. Ill try the bootup cds as quick as soon as the system restores done.

Re: Computer restarts after 2 mins
What kind of backup discs do you have? Did you make them using an imaging program? Supplied by Acer?

Re: Computer restarts after 2 mins
I planned on running the bootable cds after my system restore but the restore fixed it. I did restore to factory settings, by using alt+f10 and all problems are gone. Hopefully this wasnt a temporary fix.
-i tried using backups i made and when i looked into it it seemed vista wouldnt let a lot of people use previous back ups. |

Re: Computer restarts after 2 mins
I haven't used any of the windows backup tools since win98. Been using ShadowProtect Desktop for the last year and change, worked flawlessly so far. It's an imaging tool along the lines of Acronis or Ghost, store drive images on other drives and dvds, things get hosed you just boot from the recovery cd and restore an image and you're right back to where you were when you took the image.
Glad to hear it's working.
