Installing new graphics card, computer won't boot
Hi, I'm pretty much pulling my hair out here.. I really can't get this new graphics card to work and I've tried pretty much everything.
I'm running Windows XP and my specs are Asus P5LD2 SE motherboard, Socket LGA775, Intel 945G ICH7 Chipset, 1066/800/533MHz FSB, DDR2 667/533, PCI-Express x16 2GB DDR RAM Thermaltake VD2430BNS Matrix Black Steel Case with 430W PSU Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 Dual Core Processor - 2.0GHz, 64-Bit, 800FSB, 2MB Cache I'm currently running an old Radeon x550 128mb card and I'm trying to install a HD4670 512mb DDR3 card. What happens when I install it and turn on the computer is it loads the ASUS screen at the very start, then it goes black and restarts and the same thing happens. Then it won't start up at all and it'll have a beep, followed by three short beeps, which I've learned is a problem with the graphic adaptor. I just noticed that my motherboard supports PCI-E 1.0 and not the PCI-E 2.0 of the HD4670, but forums seem to indicate that this doesn't make a difference. My PC still works fine with the old graphics card, except that it overheats all the time (which is why I got a new one...) I'm wondering if I should update my BIOS, except I don't have a floppy disk drive and the utility I downloaded from ASUS needs a floppy to work... so I don't know what to do... any help would be greatly appreciated....!! :) |

Re: Installing new graphics card, computer won't boot
If you've recently added or tried to add additional memory to the computer and have started getting these beeps. Remove all new memory you've added to the computer. If the computer works fine after removing the new memory you're encountering either an incompatibility or defective new memory.

Re: Installing new graphics card, computer won't boot
I thought it might be the PSU but the HD4670 says it needs 400W and my Thermaltake PSU goes up to 430W.. so it should be able to handle it.. Though if you're convinced that's the problem maybe I should look into upgrading.
I haven't installed any new memory recently.. so that can't be the problem.. Thanks for the suggestion though :) |

Re: Installing new graphics card, computer won't boot
I am with dai on this one, you need a power supply that supplies enough juice to run that video card (nice card BTW), and what you have won't do that.

Re: Installing new graphics card, computer won't boot
Thanks a lot guys, I might go pick up a Vantec ION2+ 600W PSU tomorrow. Apparently it runs at about 80% so that should give me enough. Unless anyone could recommend me a decent PSU that's light on the pocket :)
Thanks so much for your quick replies by the way. |

Re: Installing new graphics card, computer won't boot
You need to take a look at dai's recommended power supply. Don't go the Vantec route unless you are in a real bind as far as getting something decent. They just aren't high quality, even if they do run a higher efficiency. Quality parts make a power supply and most don't ever accuse Vantec of having high quality parts.
Where are you planning on purchasing? If you give us your vendor of choice, one of us might be able to guide you on a decent priced quality supply.

Re: Installing new graphics card, computer won't boot
I'm looking to buy from MSY, a store in Australia
http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf my budget is around the AU$100 mark, I really can't go higher than that considering I've just bought a graphics card as well (I'm a student) Any suggestions would be great |

Wait until dai gets back on, he is from Australia and could do a better job of guiding you in that country than I can. I am sure he will be on later this evening.
