Help! Problem with 9800GTX + or insufficient Power?

Hi folks having some intersting issues with my new build. I am getting minor artifacting on the desktop and in certain games (specifically Empire:Total War) it seems to happen when I have a window open and gets worse as I scroll down pages. A right click refresh or minimizing the window usually gets rid of the artifacts. Here is where it gets interesting as soon as artifacts start appearing with in 5 minutes at most the screen blacks out with only the mouse cursor visible then there is a split second of BSOD then system restarts. When the system bots back up Vista gives me the no solution to your problem message and that it was caused by my Nvidia device. My temps seem good and the graphics card is a carry-over from my last build where it worked hunky dorry. Do you think this is being caused by insufficient power? Oh, and the lates drivers are installed. Here are the stats
Asus P6T deluxe X58 MoBo
Core i7 920
6Gb Patriot Viper DDR3 Ram
640Gb WD Caviar Black Sata HDD
Asus en9800GTX+
OCZ 600W StealthXStream
Lg DVD+-R IDE

Re: Help! Problem with 9800GTX + or insufficient Power?

It very well could be a lack of power. Normally people would recommend a good quality 650w psu for a 9800gt+. However, yours is only 600w and you have a high-powered system.

Re: Help! Problem with 9800GTX + or insufficient Power?

Thats the way I'm leaning too I mean the processor is 130W to begin with and my psu has 4 12V rails , I should probably be looing fo a single rail solution. Maybe a jump to 850W incase I want to SLi. What do you think?

Re: Help! Problem with 9800GTX + or insufficient Power?

Yeah, it sure looks like a psu problem. Especially since you said that your temps were ok and you have the latest drivers. An 850w would be a good choice. I use Corsair Power Supplies. They are great. Like this one:

I have the 650w version. And will be upgrading to this one when I upgrade my GPU next month.

What are your temps actually running at? Do you have the latest bios?

This could be part of your problem too. 72C is kinda hot. I'm not sure how hot an i7 should run.

I am not on the latest Bios, and honestly with the number of crashes going on I am hesitant to reflash the bios at all, temp was around 72 C under load.

Sorry the 9800gtx + is running at 72C underload the i7 is running in the mid 40s at idle to high 50's under load

I believe those are fairly standard temp numbers.

Re: Help! Problem with 9800GTX + or insufficient Power?

What one needs to know about...the relation of the negative effects of heat on the computer...That can be caused by the power supply.

Manufacturers test their PSU's at a set temperature...from this their rating is determined... for most this No. is 25 degrees Celsius...which falls short of the temperature that most computers are capable of achieving.

Given that a PSU will actually lose 2-5 watts per one degree of heat above the 25 Degree Celsius testing temperature...coupled with the fact that computers tend to run at 10 degrees higher than room temperature... In the summer time when the room temperature can easily reach 80 degrees F... your computer will be running at 33 Degrees C. or 90 Degrees F.

So the...math can make...your 500 watt power supply into a 460 watt unit.

In addition to this...what needs to be taken into account is that each degree that your computer components are operating at...under powered...adds more heat to the equation.

Consider also...the possibility...that ratings given by the manufacturer of single components...such as graphics cards...need to be treated with skepticism... Manufacturers may minimize support issues and under rate the power required...in order to make a larger profit.

The above has not taken into account...the issue of high quality vs poor quality units...Power supplies convert voltages from wall outlets to lower levels used by the PC. During this conversion, some power is lost as heat. The efficiency level of the PSU determines how much extra power must be put into the power supply to run the PC. A high quality PSU can help reduce the noise and heat generated within a computer system. The higher the efficiency rating the less heat the PSU has to deal with.

Therefore heat is the computers enemy...The hotter the temperature your PSU is forced to run at...the poorer the supply of power the rest of the components will receive...which has been known to lead to such things as crashes, freezing, rebooting, BSOD’s, and video distortion, as well as partial and complete failure of other components.

The fact is very few PSU’s are capable of producing the wattage that the companies advertise.

For a very good comprehension of recommended brand names, wattage, and models in listed categories...Plus much more...check out this link. Power Supply Information and Selection

Re: Help! Problem with 9800GTX + or insufficient Power?

I just ordered the Corsair 850TX so hopefully that should more than meet my requirements even at above manufacture temps.
