Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
I bought last week a Dell Inspiron 530MT. The spec sheet is given below
PROCESSOR Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor E7400 (2.80GHz, 1066FSB, 3MB) OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista(R) Home Basic SP1 Edition 32 bit MEMORY 3GB (3x1GB) NECC Dual Channel DDR2 800MHz SDRAM Memory HARD DRIVE 250GB SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive with Native Command Queuing OPTICAL DRIVE 16X DVD+/-RW with Dual Layer Write Capabilities VIDEO CARD Integrated Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 SOUND CARD Integrated 7.1 Audio KEYBOARD Dell(TM) USB Consumer Multimedia Keyboard (English) MOUSE Dell(TM) Optical USB Mouse Speaker Dell(TM) AX210 USB speaker Its a mid tower casing. I dont know actually what PCU or PCI expansion port it has for installation a new video card but after some research in the internet i found that it might have 400wat PCU and following expansion slots: Expansion Slots PCI: 2 Slots PCIe x1: 1 Slot PCIe x16 (Graphics): 1 Slot I dont think it has PCI 2.0 version for video card do it? Now can you please suggest me a video card from nVidia chipset which I can install in my this machine's motherboard without installing a new PCU? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.. |

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
The 530's usually have a 300w PSJU and have a PCIe 2.0 compatible x16 slot.
a low power card like the 8400 or 9400 may not be much of an upgrade and I would still upgrade the stock dell power supply to run it. Where are you shopping and what budget do you have for the upgrade? |

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
I am living in Sydney, Australia. So now you are suggesting that 8400GT and 9400GT is not a worth of upgrade? Those will not bring any significant upgrade in video performance?
I have budget of 150AUD which i want to spent on the video card. If I split the amount to V.card and PSU then it will be too less. And moreover I didnt want to take the hassle to install a PSU. So thats why i asked for a card which will match up with my current PSU so that I can just pop up the card in motherboard. Moreover i am new to Australia. So dont know much about the hardware shops here. Any good suggestion to choose that you know? |

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
Well, 9400GT is better than Integrated Intel X3100, but not enough for newer high-demanding video games...
I myself have 9400GT in Desktop PC and X3100 on laptop and I can tell you, 9400GT is much much better than X3100, but I cannot play newer games on high details... My suggestion is to be patient and save money for both good and powerful graphic card and good and powerful PSU... It is just my opinion, that is all =) |

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
Hmm so you are telling me that 9400GT will go with Dell 530 without changing additional PSU right? Actually i dont wanna play newer games with full details. Rather if i can play newer games in low details that might work.
Its nice that out are giving your opinion. But i have to wait so long to save that much money as i have to spent in other needs before PC upgrading. |

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
I just saw that your PC is using 300W PSU...
That will be to weak for either 9400GT and 9500GT I am afraid... If you can go and put some more money and buy Corsair 550W, that would be awesome and that would solve all your problems... I do not know how much this PSU cost in AUS, so you better check on Internet so you can know how much money you need for 9400GT + Corsiar 550... |

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
1Gig cards are more of a marketing thing a 512 Meg DDR3 card would be much faster then a 1Gig DDR2 card, even though they do not need additional power connectors they still draw more power through the motherboard then the 300w is capable of safely delivering.

You have an option to buy some less power consuming graphic cards, but that would be waste of money IMO...

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
There really isn't much to connect, 1 24 pin main connector, a 4 pin CPU connector, and 1 4 pin power connector to each drive.
Even for a 8400 I would recommend over 400w, Dell supplies are a tad misleading they're set with a higher 12v rating and lower 3.3v & 5v then a standard ATX spec psu so when you look at comparable retail PSU to get the same 12v rating it's a higher total wattage unit, They really only build them for what comes with the unit. Bottom line is people have put 8400GT in them but it will shorten the life of the psu and possibly the PC which is why we don't recommend it. |

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
@dai, actually i am not that short of money. i have 200AUD to spend on PSU and a video card. but the problem is less knowledge about PSU and how to install it is a problem. and another problem is that i am also unsure how much upgradable is Dell 530MT inspiron is.
Which card dell is capable to take? which PSU is sutable for it? |

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
You could probably run a 9600GT on a stock PSU, barely. However it would be best to save up and get, say, a 500Watt Antec PSU and a 9800GT or a Radeon 4870. I had a 9500GT, a step above the 9400, and although it's a decent card, you won't get more than low or medium quality on most games.

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
Coolermaster Extreme Power+ 650 watts i have choose to buy which is about 112AUD at the moment. So how recommand this PSU? Is it a good brand? And how would it pair up with a 9800GT? is it enough for it?
by the way what is the difference in 9800GT and 9800GTX? |

Re: Suggestion for a video card without installing a new PSU in Dell inspiton 530
We recommend only Coolermaster 'Real Power Pro'
If you can find 'Real Power Pro' PSU, that would be good for 9800GT More info about PSUs which we recommend you can find here: Power Supply Information and Selection 9800GT has 112 StreamProcessors and 9800GTX has 128 StreamProcessors, the difference is not much. I think it is about a 10% performance increase from the 16 more shaders and slightly higher clocks. The 9800GT is a renamed 8800GT. The 9800GTX is faster.(comparable to the ATI 4830) |
