[SOLVED] Damn, just lost the fan on my graphic card (Powercolor 9600)
I have an old Powercolor (Radeon) 9600 Pro, lately the fan was doing a lot of noise so I decided to unscrew it and take a look at it. While I was cleaning it I cut (with my superior finger stength) the two tiny wires that were attached from the graphic card to the graphic card's integrated fan. So I'm out of that fan! Now I'm running my PC without the fan and I could swear I'm smelling something burn but when I go take a look (or smell) closely I don't smell anything. Am I just being paranoid or am I going to burn and lose my graphics card?
By the way I'm only going to do regular tasks like Photoshop and the likes, I'm only going to play a 1999 game so it's not like I'm going to push it too far but sometimes I have quite a few programs open (browser, Photoshop, Webuilder, etc). Last edited by verticalman; 03-26-2009 at 10:22 AM. |

Re: Damn, just lost the fan on my graphic card (Powercolor 9600)
I am? :(
I have 2 other fans that belong to the PC itselfbut they are not directly pointing to the card. I also have the fan open, I dont know if that helps. |

Yup, doesn't really matter remove the card until you get a new fan use the onboard video (if you have it) or else you will cause more damage. Also post the EXACT specs of the card make model etc. I will try and find you a new fan or something equal to it.

Re: Damn, just lost the fan on my graphic card (Powercolor 9600)
I have the card box in front of me and it says it's a PowerColor 9600 Pro, 256MB, 128 bit, AGP8x (Ez Edition, 400/400 MHz Core/Mem Clock). On my hardware specs it just says Radeon 9600 Series, this is the second day or so I'm running without a fan in the card.
How could I use this onboard video? |

Also if you just ripped the wires, you can just use electrical tape and tape them back together. Make sure none of the black wire touches the other color wire. I will try and look for a fan.

Re: Damn, just lost the fan on my graphic card (Powercolor 9600)
Found one
http://www.directron.com/ecvcribl.html "Blue EverCool Mini UFO Universal Aluminium VGA Cooler, for Nvidia and ATI Series Video Cards" So from that, it should work. Until that comes just use the onboard video if you have it Or if you have a free PCI slot and that doesn't work this should help a little bit but it won't be a permanent fix. http://www.directron.com/spfc70bl.html |

Re: Damn, just lost the fan on my graphic card (Powercolor 9600)
Hey Connor thanks a lot for being helpful as you are being. The fans are relatively inexpensive I can see, I don't know how to set them up (with those tiny cables/wires) so if there isn't much of a difference I might as well just use the onboard video as you say until I buy a new PC (if I have one onboard video that is).
I checked the back of my PC case and it appears I do have a monitor blue entrance that looks like it fits the monitor cable (that I'm using for the graphics card entrance). I'm not plugging it there now because I don't know what I'm doing. By the way my board is an Intel PV D865GRH (Intel 865G chipset). Or I might buy one of those fans from my local shop or something, I'm still pondering what to do. |
