XFX GeForce 8600 GT

I was thinking of buying this card simply because I can't afford to go any higher right now. The only games I really play are Star Wars Galaxies, The Sims 2, and Supreme Commander. Right now I have a GeForce 5500, and I can play SWG on the lowest graphics possible and have an fps of about 15-20 (yes, I know this sucks), I can't even play Supreme Commander with this card, and The Sims I can play on low-medium graphics. I heard that the 8600 GT could play a bunch of games on max graphics, and I don't really care if I can play any of these on max I just want a solid 25-30 fps on medium-high graphics. Is this a good buy?

Re: XFX GeForce 8600 GT

Depends , post the make and model pc or make and model motherboard. Also post the power supply make and model , it will be on the side of the power supply and a sticker inside the machine.

OCZ / StealthXStream / 600-Watt / ATX / 120mm Fan / SATA-Ready / PCI-e Ready / Active PFC / Power Supply - is the power supply

The PC is a Dell Dimension 4700

And it's PCI-e

Re: XFX GeForce 8600 GT

Besides graphic card you need to buy more RAM because you have only 512MB DDR2...
Another 1GB would be awesome, real boost for your rig + this graphic card = you will have nice machine...
Well, it would still be weak for most newly games, and I am not sure if you can play all these games on maximum details, but 8600GT + 1GB RAM is way too much better than 5500 and 512MB RAM...

Re: XFX GeForce 8600 GT

What your budget for the card? Some 8600's are very slow while others are faster.

Re: XFX GeForce 8600 GT

Im hoping for around 50 dollars for this, because I need to get some other stuff too.

And I already have 1.5 gigs of RAM, but I already ordered another gig just so I can have more.

Yea that seems better, but my computer doesn't have a PCI-e 2.0 slot :(

The 8600 may be more expensive, but it looks like it's my only option due to the PCI-e 2.0 factor...

Re: XFX GeForce 8600 GT

The cards are backwards compatible as long as it's not a Sis or Via chipset.

Re: XFX GeForce 8600 GT

So you can put a PCI-e 2.0 card in a PCI-e slot?

Yes, it will just read that card as a regular PCI-e 2.0. It will work for you.

Re: XFX GeForce 8600 GT

I'd still get the 8600 over the 9400 , it's much faster. Plus don't bother with 1gb of video ram , these cards can't really handle that much ram and it's more a marketing gimmick. The power of the card is spread to thin across to much ram and ultimately slows it down. Shott for a 512mb. Try to also find a ddr3 model , they perform considerably better over the ddr2 models. Although it is hard to find one under 50$.
