Motherboard/Video Card Issues
I was browsing the web earlier today when my video card's (Nvidia 8600 gts) fan starting buzzing loudly and the display went blank. I shut it down using the power button and, when i powered it back up again, it sounded off a beep code indicating a video card issue. I assumed that the card had gone bad and replaced it with an older card i had upgraded from (a Radeon X700). The computer booted with the new card but the new card's fan was now whirring in the same way. I had enough time to install the new cards drivers and reboot before the display went blank in the same way as it did previously.
I am assuming it is some kind of heating issue as the fans are on constantly and the cards are hot to the touch when i remove them from the computer. This also leads me to believe it is a problem with the motherboard (or the PCI-E slot) since both cards resulted in the display going blank. Also, the computer had been on all night and was working fine for the first hour or so that i was using it this morning. This is its typical use pattern, though, as i frequently forget to turn it off at night. Thanks in advance for any help you all can give! |

Re: Motherboard/Video Card Issues
Get the temps for the devices, everything including cpu video card etc. Also get the temps from bios. Using speed fan.
http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php Then post it Also post your full specs if you need them, use cpu-z: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php |

Re: Motherboard/Video Card Issues
Here are the temps and fan speeds from the BIOS. I don't have enough time to download and run any other tools to post data as I lose my display shortly after I get to the Windows desktop.
Processor Zone Temperature: 79C/174F (Gradually increasing as I write this post... 82C now) System Zone 1 Temperature: 34C/95F System Zone 2 Temperature: 35C/95F Processor Fan Speed: 2550 RPM Rear Fan Speed: 0(?) RPM (Read from BIOS though fan is visibly on) Front Fan Speed: 2800 RPM +1.5V in: 1.506V Vccp: 1.317V +3.3V in: 3.310V +5V in: 5.184V +12V in: 11.812V Looks like I may need new thermal paste or a new cpu cooler? Processor is a Pentium 4 550. |

Re: Motherboard/Video Card Issues
Yes the CPU is too warm try cleaning the heat sink with a can of compressed air, and make sure the heat sink is tight to the CPU check all 4 legs are fully seated.
Keep a close eye on the 12v rail it is in spec at 11.8v but in the Bios there isn't a big load on it and we have seen Video problems start around 11.7v. |
