Finally upgrading video card..advice please.

It seems that the new PC games coming out just wont play unless I upgrade the graphics card. Heres what I have, If I need to provide more info let me know. I am looking to spend no more than $60, hopefully thats enough to get a pretty good card, if not I might be able to go a bit higher. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much. - Gary

Welcome to tsf.

This is the Pavilion A730N correct? Are you currently using a video card or the on board graphics? 60$ isn't a whole lot so you will pretty much be looking at low end cards that will be able to run on it's stock 300w power supply.

Yes the A730n. I was recommended the Radeon 4650 by a friend, what do you think about that, will it work for my system? Thanks.

Re: Finally upgrading video card..advice please.

Well no I would not use that w/o a proper power supply. That is a mid range card and your system for only 60$ is suited for low end cards only such as 4350's and 9400's. What card is the system currently using , or is it using the onboard intel graphics?

Re: Finally upgrading video card..advice please.

any 380w is unlikely to cut it with that card

Re: Finally upgrading video card..advice please.

If it's a decent 380w the ddr2 model's would be ok , I'd only be worried if it were a ddr3 model. But thats only provideing that it's a decent 380w , if not then only low ends.

Re: Finally upgrading video card..advice please.

Hey if you dont mind spending about $80 i suggest an ati radeon 4670. I have one in my hp dx2300 and that only has a 250W psu and it runs perfectly. here is the one i have :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161252

Its a pretty decent card. 512MB DDR3 2Ghz memory clock and 780Mhz core clock. I play fallout three on it maxed out ant it runs very smoothly.

Not for long it doesn't.

Sorry but that raidmax 380w isn't very good at all , hence the 20$ price tag. And the "theory" that 4670 will work good on a 250w is also just incorrect. Considering it actually needs a decent 450w or higher.

Because of the power supplies quality I'm going to only recommend the 4350 or the 9400 in ddr2 only.

I have been using it for a couple of months now and i havent had a single problem. Its no theory, its a reality. And it works well with the 250w. Not good.

Re: Finally upgrading video card..advice please.

we recommend something that will run long term, not some thing that will run for a short term and will then need replacing again
with the possibility of causing damage to other components when it goes
agp cardsneed a min of 18amps on the 12v line
some of the newer agp card need 22-24a
you just don't find these specs on low wattage psu's

It's not going to work much longer. Sorry but to run a card under powered and claim that it doesn't need even whats recommended on the box is not a smart move.
