BFG 9800GT OC temperature
My card comes with a 6-pin to 2x 4-pin connector and my PSU has several PCI-E 6-pin connectors...I tried both instances, plugging in just the 6-pin(what I have the card on now) and the 2x 4-pin, now the question I have is, would any of these instances help or hurt my card, performance wise? temperature wise?
Now...idlely my video card runs at around 65C~68C and with loads like running World of Warcraft it goes to about 76C~78C, 78 being actually kinda rare, 77 is the average. I read some things yesterday on a different site because I couldn't access TSF and didn't know if you guys had a sticky on this and the reading I did points to say that 60C-78C is alright and sort of normal with the new cards like mine. I'm wondering, do I need to get a new fan? should I put my tower on my desk and use a fan that I have in my room to aim it at my hardware without the side-case on? Sorry for the long thread, but one last instance that I've decided upon, I need to get a bigger case, because the case I have now is actually pretty small and since I just installed a Corsair 750TX, I really need the room and if i buy a bigger case, the ones I'm looking at come with 2-3 fans for cheap, but I really need to know what to do before I blindly do something that costs me a good video card or my whole computer. Thanks TSF. |

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
For idle 65 to 68c is kinda high. Considering 75c is when cards will start to glitch up and have errors and fry.
What is the cooling setup in the case? For high end rigs you need lots of intake and exhaust fans(intake on the front and side panel , exhaust at the rear and top). Set the card fan speed higher , and lower the room temp.

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
Yeah, that's what I kind of figured. I have a small case, but it's more built for high end gaming. The corsair came with a lot of cables that I don't need to fill out so I tucked them away. My ventilation sucks really, in my opinion I have the PSU fan and I have the stock fan on one of the heat sinks and 1 spot open to place another fan.
I'm looking to buying a new case soon, hopefully before the worst comes out of having a small case. I haven't experienced any lower FPS issues or glitches while gaming, and sitting at school, I thought about why the temp might be that High and it's probably because I am dual monitoring, so that could be a factor, couldn't it? EDIT: I'm not too experienced with building a computer and I'm learning because I'm going into Computer Engineering for college, so I can take a picture of my rig and attach it to my next reply if you'd like and you can tell me what to do, but any suggestions on a case to get? Also, my room is right next to the furnace for my house so that could be a factor as well considering it vents directly into my room and my door is closed a lot of the time =/ Last edited by Synthx; 02-18-2009 at 01:46 PM. |

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
my recommendation if you want a case that will keep everything very cool is to get this one(comes with 6 fans)
4 x 120mm fans 2 x 140mm fans NXZT Tempest Black $110 after rebate $90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146047 |

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
I like that case :D
Yeah, I was cramming last night so I forgot a picture, but I'll attach one when I get back after school to show you guys how...I guess..."sad" my case is, haha. I don't have a very paying job, so I'll keep up to get that case. Now...I've never replaced a case before. Hopefully I can do it successfully :D Thanks for the help guys. |

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
Sounds like a good idea. I was just considering placing my tower on my desk and keeping the side panel on, but I'm gonna see how it goes for now, I'm actually leaving in about 20 mins to go get either a 120mm or 180mm, depending on what my buddy can get for cheap.
Attached are pics of my rig, hope you enjoy going "O.O;..." Last edited by Synthx; 02-19-2009 at 01:59 PM. |

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
Yea put it on top of the desk, and definitely add lots of fans. One in the empty exhaust fan port, and more to the side panel.
And what cpu does that have in it? Because the cpu heat sink is tiny , lol.

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
DEAR GOD MAN!
By the way, I'm jealous of the 280(or 295)X in your tower ;-; My card is like...so insignificant... The more I look at that case the more I like it, I've already started my own little fund for it so hopefully in the next week or two it will be on its way. Though I've never moved a mobo into a new case before...so I hope I can do it right >.< Thanks again emosun and Mcninja :D you guys are a big help. OH! also, I have no fan controls on my card, is this...normal or is it just weird and would it matter if i just use the PCI-E power cord from the Corsair or would I just use the 6pin - 2x 4pin molex connectors that came with the card? |

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
I would definitely use the corsair 6 pin connector.
The only reason to use the pins that came with card is if you have a PSU which doesn't have a 6 pin connector which pretty much means that, that kind of PSU shoudn't be used its a GTX 260 yea I like that NXZT tempest case too I've been recommending it for a while now. yea my card just has a fancy metal case, its just a single card with really good cooling. idle at around 42C with 60% fan speed and full load @ 69C with around 65% fan speed(custom video card bios) I changed when the fan speeds up for the temp in the new bios for the card |

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
Sweet, thanks :D
Video card custom BIOS? o.O never heard of that before... Only thing I've learned about BIOS...Don't touch it. 42C....sooooo....cooooool like breeze in the wind xD Yeah I just talked to my buddy, I'm gonna go into the computer store and buy a 120mm fan, so i'll see how that works, and I'm about to move the tower onto my desk Also, I asked in another post...would having my two monitors plugged in and on affect the temperature of the card considering it's suppporting 2 LCD monitors at 2 different resolutions? I'd figure it would... |

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
yea my guess is that it would affect the card's temp too. but not by too much though maybe about 5C or so
well sometimes you need to update your motherboard's bios because certain new CPU's don't work. I had to update my Motherboard bios about 2years ago. I got my computer back in 2006 only thing original I still use is my Monitor and Motherboard and one of my HDD's |

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
Hmmm, I'll have to see if my BIOS should be updated. I've had this computer for awhile, I wanna say I got this back in '06 so I'll look around :P
I've read about flashing the BIOS, but I'm too afraid I'll terminally destroy my mobo if I try haha, so I'll look at it and consider it :D Yeah...I have a 19" and a 22" monitor sooo yeah I figured :P |

Re: BFG 9800GT OC temperature
Oh, alright then.
See I'm learning so good to know what not to do for my own good XD haha I have been considering a new mobo package with a Quad for a bargain that my friend offered, DDR3 compatible and a nice Heatsink, but its kind of a longshot, so i'm just window shopping when it comes to mobo's and whatnot |
