9800 questions

I'm looking into purchasing a new gpu. My brother-in-law has a nice set up with 8800gts (I think it was a gts, maybe gtx...either way...). I was considering getting that, but then nvidia decided they wanted to put their new line of product out. I recall hearing that more memory on the gpu for the 8800 didn't result in better performance, the 512 always seemed to outperform the 768 and any others. Is this a similar situation with the 9800 series as well do you know?

I see the choices are a bit limited at the moment -- GT and GTX+ at 512 or 1024, GTX only 512. Is there one that is clearly better than the others? Is it worth a price jump (assuming it is indeed a jump) for the better one?

Thanks for any insight. And so you don't have to ask, yes I do game, yes I plan to game in the future, no I don't intend on having to do high graphics demand from engineering calculations or simulations, work belongs at work and can be done on their computer on their time!
