rma'd and got a new gfx

Ok I had a 8800gtx and it was overheating so i sent it in. For me replacement evga gave me a 9800gtx+ 1gb. Now i can't find any benchmarks or reviews for the 1gb one so i don't know if I got a bad deal. I've noticed it runs much cooler but I notice almost no difference performance wise.

If you were in my position what would you do? I had contemplated adding a second 8800gtx but was unsure if my psu could handle two, or should I just go ahead and add another 9800gtx?

9800GTX and a 8800GTX are pretty close the G92 chip runs cooler though the PSU should handle 2 of them but I doubt you will see more then a 10-15% performance gain depending on your monitor size and resolution.

hmmmmmmmm.......... thats a decent rig ........if you arent overclocking the Q6600 you arent able to tap out the capabilities of a 9800GTX plus anyway! so what good will it do to add more ?

do you see any lagging or other inadaquacies when gaming ? is anything not to your liking while gaming ?

SLI is not all just good things ........many games will run slower in sli mode then they do with a single card .......... depends on the individual game and the game scene you are in if its optimized for sli ........... that why the majority of the time you only get 10-15% at best improvement ................

I would say if you want to pick things up "if" your gaming experience needs to be improved ?????? overclock your cpu so you can get the all the muscle the video card has to offer !

thanks for the reply. I've currently got my cpu watercooled and I keep it at 2.7ghz because its the easiest setting and nothing seems to strain it. Funny though I did order some new ram to bump me up to 4gb and then I think i'll overclock to 3 again and it arrives today (thank newegg only takes 1 day to get stuff). As for the gfx I play at 1680x1050 which it handles pretty well but games like crysis is not always smooth as glass. I'm looking in the near future to getting a new TV that has a resolution of 19XX and there is where I'd think the usefulness of a second would come in handy. I remember when I got my gfx for over 600 and now 200 for another seems like a good deal. I've read many games are not optomized for sli but I do think more will be.

Seems the opinion though that 9800gtx is better than my 8800gtx?

Re: rma'd and got a new gfx

the video cards are equal on performance but the 9800 is much better heat wise .........

if your Q6600 is at 3.0ghz then you should see some "glass" again in crysis >>>> with water cooling 3.0ghz should be easy to achieve ...... hell, fellas are getting that on air cooling ................ unless of course if you are intot he hot summer months ...... then you have to back off

i've got it at 2.7 at it rarely goes above 35c let alone 40c. i know i can overclock it a lot more I just don't see the point. These games aren't designed to run at 12ghz! I think the extra ram and extra gfx will go a long way to smoothing the playing experience out. When I get the new ram today i'll boost my cpu up to 3ghz. Really not worried about heat since my case has plenty of fans and my cpu is only thing be watercooled with 1/2inch tubing and pretty big two fan radiator.

I just figured since it would be so easy to add another one of these 9800gtx+ 1gb since it uses a lot less power and only requires a 6pin connector. The highest i've seen temps go with one is 67c so adding another shouldn't create much more heat compared to adding another 8800gtx

Re: rma'd and got a new gfx

Little update. I got the ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146785 and have overclocked to 3ghz. Still need to lower my cpu voltage to find out how low I can go before becoming unstable because right now its pretty solid. Ran 3dmark few times and saw pretty big improvement from about 12500 to 14000. I've also run prime95 for two hours with no hiccups and memtest for 2hours. as set right now cpu temp idles at 37c and load 50c
